(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Legion members initiated BY NEIL SHAW The general meeting of Legion Branch 109 was held in the Jubilee Room on Tues- day, February 1 with 41 members present and Presi- dent Claire Bedard in the chair. Seven new members were initiated into branch 109 in a ceremony conducted by comrades Les Riley and Harold Chambers. Those members initiated were Bruce Manzs, John Orr, Grace Mugford, Edna Powell, Wayne Squire, Gary Bell and Doug Gavin. Several requests to the Branch resulted in the ap- proval of a total of $1625 in donations to various causes. The Branch donated $1000 to the St. John Ambulance to aid he local group in the purchase of a new mobile unit. The Goderich Skating Club received $100 and $200 was donated to Debbie Hor- ton to assist her in her trip to the figure skating competi- tion. The Branch donated $300 to the Cerebral Palsy Telethon and $25 to the March of Dimes. Applications for ordinary membership in Branch 109 were approved for Bruce Manzs, Wayne Squire, Mur- ray 'Watt and Richard Madge. Associate members whose applications were ac- - cepted were Lynn Mc- Callum, Grace Mugford, Ed- na Powell, and Francis Pro- fit. Members are to note that the annual dues for 1984 will be increased by five dollars to $20 for ordinary and associate members -and-$25 for fraternal members. The sports chairman Bea Dowell reported that two teams of dart players won at the Zone competition and will now advance to District Two of the bowling teams competed at Zone . and one will compete at the District level. A branch euchre tour- nament is scheduled for February 12 and the branch mixed bowling tournament has been set for March 26. From the report of com- rade Ray Barker, the sick and welfare chairman, it was learned that comrades Harold Hibbert, Harry Symonds, Clayton Weston, Harold Downie, and Wayne Gilders are at present in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. Jim Gib- son is in University Hospital and. Russ Drennan, Jack Kempson and Bill Michie are in Westminster Hospital. Comrade Barker also reports that the plans for the annual Vimy Banquet to be held on Saturday, April 9 are well advanced with tickets to be on sale as of March 1. Youth and Education chairman Maurice Wilkin- son reminded the members that the Branch public speaking competition fdr students from the public schools and • the collegiate will be held in the Jubilee Room on Wednesday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. Property chairman Harold Chambers received permis- sion to proceed with the in- sulation of the remainder of the building and to install new sinks and counter top in the lounge on the main floor. The house chairman, Eleanor Worsell stated that the refinishing of the chairs in the Vimy Lounge has com- menced and that a cover for the table in the board room has been ordered. The Branch Honours and Awards night will be held on Saturday, March 5 and those members eligible for the year pins are requested to cheek for their name in the last branch bulletin. The Branch approved sen- ding both the President and the First Vice-president to the Legion Provincial Con- vention to be held in Niagara Falls from May 15 to 19.
