Vikings reach finals
of their own tourney
By T.D.
The GDCI Vikings reached the finals of
their own Tenth Annual ' Invitational
Tournament here Saturday but lost the
championship game, 65-56 to their Huron -
Perth rivals, the Stratford Northwestern
Huskies.
To reach the finals, the Vikings got by
London Medway, 57-53 in their opening
round game and defeated Owen Sound
West Hill, 54-46 in the semi-final.
Northwestern got to the finals by beating
London Westminister, 59-46 in their first
game and squeeked by Sarnia St. Clair; 62-
60 in the other semi-final.
Georgetown took the consolation title by.
defeating Sault Ste Marie Korah, 62,57.
In the championship.. game, the Nor-
thwestern Huskies were led by the tour-
nament's most valuable player, Rob
James who had 16 points. Mike Otto added
14 and Jerry Denny had 11.
• For the Vikings, Scott Bell, who made
the tournament all-star team, led the
attack with 19.points. Don McCallum had
11 and Chris Pitre added 10. Kevin Adams
and Kevin Smith both had six a piece and
Joe Morrissey hooped four points.
Reaching the finals of the tournament
was a bit of a rarity for the Vikings and'
they played well against some top flight
competition.
In the final the Vikings trailed by only
three points at halftime but a lapse in the
third quarter proved to be too muchto
overcome in the final eight minutes.
The Huskies outscored Goderich 22-10 in
the third quarter. However, the Vikings
fought back to within five points and had
possession of the ball with 1:20 to play, but
they failed to score and then were forced
into fouling to try to regain the ball. Jerry
Denny potted six in a row from the charity
stripe to sew up the Huskie victory.
The loss was the third in tournament and
league play this season by the Vikings to
Stratford. Coach Myles Murdock and his
Vikings hope that the next time they meet
(possibly in Huron -Perth playoffs) the
results will be different. .
The Vikings played an aggressive man-
to-man defence in their openmg.game with
Medway and were able to cause many
turnovers with their press.
Kevin Adams, who had a fine tour-
nament and Scott Bell each had 17 points
for Goderich. Don McCallum hooped 11.
Kevin Smith, who rebounded well, had six
and Joey Morrissey threw in four. Chris
Pitre has two points.
The Goderich Machinist Atoms were Hodges on two and Shawn Talbot, Lonnie
runners-up in the B division of the Lucan Rumig and Harrison on one each.
Leprechaun Tournament on the weekend, Goderich bombarded Belmont with five
winning their first two games against
Seaforth and Belmont and narrowly losing
the championship game to Petrolia.
Although the local Atoms were unable to
bring home the Leprechaun championship
for the second year in a row, Richard
Bowman was chosen as the most valuable
player for the Goderich team in the
championship gam e.
In Friday night's game against Seaforth,
two periods of overtime had to be played
fter a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation play.
ince neither team scored during this,
shots on goal were counted and
oderich won 3-2. Seaforth later went on to
the 13 consolation.

Medway.
The Vikings played a highly emotional
game against West Hill in the semi-finals.
They had lost to the Owen Sound team by
five earlier'tn the season and fell behind 15-
4 in the first quarter Saturday when they
came out tight, making only one of their
first 15 shots.
The Vikings kept hustling, however, and
forced turnovers which gave them a great
come -back victory. The Vikings took the
lead for the first time at the end of the third
quarter and then kept it.
DoneelcCallum got hot in the secondhalf,
making five of nine shots from the floor
and eight of ten from the foul line. Kevin
Adams and Kevin Smith both had strong
defensive games.
McCallum finished the game with 22
points while Adams had 10. Scott Bell
hooped eight, Joey Morrissey got six and
both Kevin Smith and Chris Pitre had four
apiece.
Bill Rusk, with 20, and Rob Quesnl, with
12, topped the Owen Sound scoring.
In addition to Scott Bell, the tournament

Georgetown, Bill Rusk of Owen Sound,
Jack Willett of Sault Korah and Mike Otto
of the Huskies.
The Vikings played an exhibition game
against Sault Ste Marie on Friday night,
losing by ewo points 47-45. The Korah team
showed a lot of hustle, crashing the boards
and diving for the loose balls. In contrast,
the Vikings did not shoot well, hitting only
28 per cent from the floor and 61 per cent
from the foul line.
Don McCallum had 20 points to top the
Viking point production. Scott Bell had
nine, Chris Pitre, and Kevin Smith had six
apiece while Dave More and Joe
Morrissey each got two points.
Tournament organizer, Viking coach
Myles Murdock was pleased with not only
his own team's play but also with the
excellent help he received from those who
worked at the tournament. He also ex-
pressed his appreciation to the fans who
supported the tournament and the families
who helped by billeting the ,players from
Sault Ste Marie.

did not allow Belmont another chance to
score. Two of these last .five .goals were
scored by Harrison with singles going to
Bowman, Andre Cauchi and Ryan Fagan.
O'Neill had two assists and Rumig and
Pearson had one each.
After a six hour wait at the arena, the `
Goderich Machinist Atoms came up
against Petrolia for the B championship
and narrowly lost 4-2. -
Petrolia>was well rested for the game
after getting a bye right into the finals.
They also came into the game determined.
to beat Goderich since the locals had
previously eliminated them in the Silver
Stick tournament in Forest. The Petrolia
fans were rowdy and the team was rough.
Petrolia opened the scoring in the first
period and then scored another before the
end of that period.
At the beginning of tie second period,
O'Neill scored for Goderich, assisted by
Harrison, and Hodges. However, Petrolia
