Recording volunteers needed
A regular meeting of the
Huron County Genealogical
Society was held February 2
with a good number of
members and guests in at-
tendance. CKNX T.V. was
also present and taped por-
tions of the meeting for
future presentation on
CKNX T.V. News.
Chairman, Carole Robin-
son, regretfully announced
the passing .of one of the
members but was pleased to
add that a bequest had been
left to the Huron County
Branch. She noted that
members with genealogical
holdings should make
preparations for them in
their wills if they wish them
to go to a specific person or
place after their demise.
The mystery prize, which
this month was a plaque,
was won by Carole Robinson
of Goderich.
Mrs. Alison Lobb, a
member from Clinton, gave
a presentation on Hullett
Township, with special em-
phasis on. the cemeteries
contained therein. She noted
that it will soon be time to
start work on recording of
cemeteries in Huron County
again and volunteers " are
urgently required.
Members Beryl Reid of
Blyth and Genevieve Allen of
Londesboro brought four of
the Tweedsmuir Books with
them for the members to ex-
amine. They are a project of
the Women's Institute and
were begun in 1964. To date,
four have been completed
but are always being added
to. It is a fascinating collec-

County sham budget decreases
By Stephanie Levesque
Huron County's share of
the proposed 1983 budget of
the planning and develop-
ment department is down
over $10,000 from last year.
Council approved the
budget at its February 3 ses-
sion. All budgets are subject
to review when county coun-
cil reviews all the depart-
ment budgets to make one
budget.
The total 1983 budget for,
the planning and develop-
ment department is $340,227.
In 1982, the two departments
were separate but had a
combined total of $323,054.
To make up the difference
after deducting the county's
share, increased revenue is
expected from community
planning study grants
($35,400 in '1983 • up from
$27,000 in 1982) and monies
will be taken from the
county's reserve fund, in the
amount of $20,000.
Salaries make up the
largest portion of the expen-
ditures at $160,579. This
marks a reduction from the
combined 1982 budgets of the
planning and development,
but planner Gary Davidson
noted the decrease is
because the county does not
have to pay the salary of a
full-time development of-
ficer.
The major increase in the
budget is in production costs.
The proposed 1983 costs are
$62'250, up from '$25,000= m.
1982. Mr. Davidson noted
these costs include produc-
ing maps, plans and zoning
bylaws. He added that the
costs of the county's printing
office are included. He
assured council that what
can be done by the county is
done there, while such things
as maps larger than eight by
14 inches, color work, work
involving photographs, off-
set pressing and work for
large scale distribution on
newsprint has to be done
elsewhere.
Business development and
transportation represents
another large .portion of the
budget at $39,000, down from
the 1982 budgllt figure of
$42,800. This citegory en-
compasses travel for plann-
ing projects in• the county
and travel for development.
In 1983, the planning and
development department
will be working on planning
projects in 16 municipalities.
Five of these, in the
municipalities of Colborne;
Grey, Tuckersanith, Usborne
and the Town of Goderich
are expected to be com-
pleted this year. Seven plan-
ning projects will be started
this year and four are on-
going.
Other on-going projects at
the county level include:
lakeshore . management
plans in 'conjuction with
Maitland ` Valley Con-
servation Authority and the
ministry . of natural
resources, a rural energy
study in co-operation with
the ministries of municipal
affairs and housing and
energy, preparing an
economic development
strategy •for the county,
developing a county adver-
tising program, reviewing
the Planning Act and up-
dating background informa-
tion booklets.
Firemen to get paging system
The February session of
West Wawanosh Township
Council took place on
Tuesday, February 1. Tom
Day of Pollard Bros. gave a
slide presentation on
calcium chloride and its
benefits to gravel roads, and
then answered ' questions
posed by council members.
Councillor Rpynard's
report as Lucknow Fire
Department representative
was discussed and a motion
was passed that the Town-
ship of West Wawanosh
hereby approves the pur-
chase by the Lucknow Fire
Department of ai paging
system (beepers)' for the
firemen.
The reeve and clerk were
authorized to apply for the
annual, subsidy on road
-expenditures for the. year
1982, in the amount of
$224,313.57.
Road accounts in the
amount of $10, 675.13 and
general accounts of
$11,299.92 were orderd paid.
Building permits. were
issued to J. Thompson
(house); and L. Strutton
(addition).
A notice, regarding a
municipal drain which could
affect West Wawanosh
Township, received from
Colborne Township, was
discussed. The clerk will
acknowledge its receipt to
the Colborne Township
clerk.
A delegation from the
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture, consisting of
Tony McQuail, Cecil
Cranston and Neil Stapleton,
attended the meeting and
presented a resume of the
Federation's work and ac='
complishments, and en-
tertained questions of
council.
A resolution from the town
of Clinton concerning
Assessment Review Court
procedures was endorsed by
council.
The mandatory increase
for employees earning under
$20,000 per year was
discussed at length, but no
decision was reached at this
time.
Council adjourned to
Tuesday, Marchl at 10 a.m.
More money for town
The Ministry of Tran-
sportation and Com-
munication informed the
town, its subsidy allocation
for 1983'would be $352,100.
Of the amount, $168;004. is
to be used for road con-
struction and the remaining
$184,000 for maintenance.
Commissioner of Works
Ken Hunter informed council
that the amount represents
an increase of eight or nine
per cent over the amount
received last year. However,
he said the increase is only
reflected in the maintenance
portion of the subsidy.
rt's.noore than we thought
we'd get; but not for con-
struction," he said.
