Legion Branch 109 president Clare Bedard presented cash
awards to participants in the Legion's poem, essay and
poster contest. The winners in the back row are are Tracy
Renon, Grade 6 Colborne School, third essay; Paula
Desjardine Grade 5 St. Marys -second essay; Erin Hassall,
Grade 6 Victoria School -first poster and Jennifer Chan,
Grade 5 Robertson School -first poem. The front row in-
cludes; Christine Straughan, Grade 5 VictoritSchool, third
poem; Heidi Zoethout, Grade 5 Victoria School, second -
poster; Shoana Martin, Grade 4 St Marys School, third

Grades 7,8 and 9 were Andrew MacAdam, Lori Millian and Heath Horvath. The students

wins Chalmers
Play award
Anne Chislett has won the
Chahners Canadian Play
Award for the best Canadian
play presented in Toronto in
1982 for her play Quiet in the.
Land.
Quiet in the Land, a story
of two Amish families durmg
the tension -filled period of
World War I, was commis-
sioned by artistic Director
Janet. Amos for the 1981
Blyth Summer Festival. It
vas revived for the 1982
Summer Festival before be-
ing • taken on tour to the
University of Waterloo Arts
Centre where it played to
packed houses. Sets,
costumes and' some
members of the cast then
went on to Toronto Free
Theatre for a successful pro-
duction in October and
November which qualified
the play for the ChalMers
Award. Only plays presented
in Toronto qualify. The
award includes a $5000 prize.
A native'of Newfoundland,
Ms. Chislett has lived in Vic-
toria, B.C. for the past three
years. With her husband
James Roy, first artistic
director of the Blyth Sum -
men Festival, she played an
integral part in founding and
building the Festival to its
present popularity. She serv-
ed as administrator in the
first two seasons and
assisted with fund • raising
and a thousand other little
things to make the fledgling
festival, succeed. ,Elesides
-Quiet in the Laid,' ihe has
also written the highly suc-
cessful Tomorrow Box
(which will be revived this
season) and A Summer Bur-
ning for the Festival.
Quiet in the Land will
receive another production
at the Centaur Theatre in
Montreal in March with
James Roy directing.
Two runner-up plays were
also awarded to west coast
writers. John Lazarus'
Dreaming and Duelling and
Tom Wamsley's White Boys
each won $1500.
The Hobbit will
play at Blyth Hall
The visually stunning
Theatre Sans Fils stage
adaptation of The Hobbit by
J.R.R. Tolkien will fill the
stage at Blyth. Memorial
Hall with colotir and fantasy
on Thursday, March 3.

fabulous adventure in which
he becomes a hero, very
much in spite of himself.
Like any self-respecting hob-
bit, he would prefer to stay
at home in his comfortable
hobbit hole, daydreaming
and smoking his pipe. He
never in his life dreamed he

audience attuned to the
screen effects of Star Wars."
Tickets for The Hobbit,
part of the Blyth Centre for
the Arts theatre series, are
now available from the box
office by mail or telephone
(on Tuesdays and
