(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Atoms still in first place after two weekend wins The Goderich Machinist Atoms won both their hockey games on the weekend to maintain their first place division standing in the Shamrock League. Their record now is 14 wins and two losses. On Saturday, the local Atoms travelled to Strathroy and handed their hosts a 6-2 loss with a four goal performance from Chris O'Neill. O'Neill opened up the scoring for Goderich in the first period .with an assist from Richard Bowman. Bowman scored Goderich's next goal unassisted. Andre Cauchi notched Goderich's third goal assisted by Brian Lane and Shawn Talbot. And with only 10 seconds remaining in the first period, O'Neill got his second goal of the game assisted by Jeff Hodges. Strathroy got on the scoreboard at the beginning of the second period and O'Neill got his third goal,of the game for Goderich In the second period as well, assisted by Jeff Hodges. In the third period, Goderich and Strathroy each scored once, with Goderich's goal coming from O'Neill assisted by Tim Harrison. On Sunday, the local Atoms travelled to Exeter, this time handing their hosts a 5-3 loss. Exeter got. the only goal of the first period but Goderich managed to tie things up at the beginning of the second period on a goal by Andre Cauchi assisted by Shawn Talbot. Exeter went ahead 'again at the begin- ning of the third period and Cauchi came back_ with the tying goal again for Goderich, this time unassisted. Goderich then came on strong with three goals in a row while Exeter managed only one more near the end of the game,. Goderich's goals were scored by Chris O'Neill assisted by Tim Harrison and Jason Pearson, Harrison assisted by Richard Bowman and O'Neill assisted by Harrison. Pat Donnelly played both games in net for the local Atoms on the weekend. The Goderich Machinist Atoms will have their next outing this Saturday against St. Marys' in St. Marys. The following weekend, they will participate in the an- nual Lucan Leprechaun Tournament. Novices lose one and tie one The Goderich Garb. and Gear Novice team lost one -game and tied another on the weekend. , On Friday night, the local team travelled to Parkhill .where :they were defeated 4-0. The score remained at 0-0 until half way through the second period when Parkhill scored ,The other three goals were all scored in the third period. Parkhill's Shayne Robinson had a hat trick for his team. On Saturday in Goderich; "the local Novice •team tied Strathroy 3-3. Chad Goderich scored the first two goals in the third period to give them the lead but Strathroy came back with two. goals of their own scored within 51 'seconds of one anotherto•tie things up once again, Goderich's two third period . goals were both scored by Ian Bowman, the first one being assisted by Jared Whalen and Jason Jeffrey and the second onebeing assisted by Jeffrey and Jason Hayter. On Saturday,January 29, the Garb and Gear Novices will play an exhibition game in Zurich. On Saturday, February 5, they Papple opened the scoring for Goderich will play an exhibition game here against with an assist from his brother Todd in the . Port Huron, Michigan. The Lions are not sure when their next home game will be but they will be travelling to Forest tonight to play the North American Silver Stick champions in an exhibition game. Juvenilesrack up 12th win The Signal -Star Juveniles padded their winning record with a victory in Shamrock League play this week. On Sunday, the Stars racked up their 12th win of the season against only five losses and two ties with a 5-1 victory over Dorchester in Dorchester. Goderich held a one -goal lead after the first period, increased the margin to 4-0 with three goals in the second period and then traded a goal with Dorchester in the final period to produce the 5-1 final. Jeff Sargent led the Stars offensively with two goals: He opened the scoring in the first period after taking a pass from Dave Gallow and scored the fifth Goderich OP goal in the third period. Gallow also had two points in the game, scoring the. second Goderich goal after converting a pass from linemate Mark Crawford. Tim Chisholm put the Stars ahead by three goals with a powerplay effort in the second period . with assists credited to Scott Stolle and Del Bedard. Dave McDonald scored the fourth Goderich goal in the final minute of the second period as the Stars enjoyed a manpower advantage. The Stars' next game is scheduled for Sunday, February 6 when Belmont will be in town for a 2.30 p.m. contest. Goderich goals were scored by Pare Wilkinson (three),, Angie Chisholm. (two) and Vicky Van- derburgh, Marianne Glazier, Amber Lebeau, Debbie Hebei, Mary Su McLennan, Stacy Rean and Mary Michelle Morrissey (one each ). The Goderich team displayed good sport- smanship in the game and the Goderich goalie, Tanya Jefferey, also helped make the game a good time for both _teams.
