No one living can remember those, days, but. we do know that there have been other years with little snow in the winter, and years with cool summers. As someone has said, the only predictable fact about the weather is` that it cannot be predicted. And although meteorology has developed. into a fine and interesting science, long-range predic- tions often seem httle better than enlightened guesses.• But we would like to know about the future. Jesus was about to ascend from His disciples', immediate sight, and He was asked what the future held in store for them. "Wilt thou again restore the kingdom...?" Jesus replied that the future is in God's. hands, and that He would send the Holy Spirit to help them with the work they must do in extending the Kingdom of God themselves. "Ye shall be my witnesses." Actually, the disciples were looking in two direc- tions at once: backward into their history when Israel had a strong nation, and with hope into the future that the kingdom might be restored. Jesus told them what to do with their own lines, set as they were in the midst of a changing world. Do you know the serenity prayer? I learned it first from members of Alcoholics Anonymous. It asks God to grant us the serenityto act centthe things we cannot change, to change the things we can, and to give us the wisdom to know the di- ference.'It is a good prayer for all of us. BY THE REVEREND ROBERT J. CROCKER,. ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power." - The Acts 1:7 Weather is the common topic of conversation. And particularly this winter: the green. Christmas, mild weather, late snows -. we hear little else. Everyone is attempting a long-range weather forecast, the predominant feeling being that we are somehow going to suffer for it later on. Maybe so. Time will tell. In 1875, after the Crimean War,"there was a depression with inflated prices and in- terest rates, followed by a year without a 11 summer. Crops were washed out by tremendous May rains, June was a bit better, but a July frost destroyed the second planting. One theory is that volcanic eruptions sent vast quantities of particles into the upper air forming a blanket which inhibited the executive elected The ladies of. St. George's A.C.W. held their January meeting in the parish hail. The President; Alma Craven, led the group in prayer, followed by scrip- ture reading by Doris Har- rison. The treasurer and secretary gave their reports; monthly and an- nual. Nell Coates presented the projected budget for 1983. Reports were heard from the various groups - Canon Taylor, Mission, Catering, Board of Manage - menti President 'Alma con- gratulated everyone for their combined efforts in achieving a very successful year, both financially and spiritually.
