One hundred and forty representatives of various tourist oriented committees. and boards from the region were there. The guest speaker Mr. Michael Baker, director of tourism and management for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, began his remarks with the statement that by the year 2000, tourism will be Ontario's largest industry. With this in mind, the province is substantially involved, in that its budget for tourism promotion for.1982 was in ex- cess xcess of $18 million. The "spin-off" of tourism dollars creates a Major economic, impact in.:'all tourist oriented areas.. One of thesubstantial increases, as a result of the Provincial advertising program, is that the number of tourists from Europe, Japan, United States and the United Kingdom, coming to On- tario, has tripled. At its regular meeting Monday, council voted against paying half: of the cost to have the Clinton Pipe Band participate in the Bay City St. Patrick's Day Parade in March. Council also held discussions on the cost of sending delegates to the Bay City parade and the cost of entertaining Bay City delegates who participate in the Founder's , .Day - ,celebrations in Goderich. A..motlon to pay hall of the expenses, t5 li ive the Clinton band represent the town in Bay City, was defeatedwfth Mayor Eileen ° Paltrier casting the deciding vote. Councillors Bill Clifford. and Jim Searls questilped spending approximately $600 to have the town represented by a . band from Clinton. Council was informed that the Laketown Band has not represented Goderich in the parade because of com- mitments. While council will not chip in for the band a motion to spend $300 for bus,<fare ju d ac'comodatton in Bay City for three town representatives and their wives, was carried 4-2 in a recorded vote. Searls argued that the taxpayer should not haVe to pick up the tab for the Huy City weekend expenses but conceded that the town should pay the mayor's expenses. Council also agreed to host a reception for Bay City dignitaries and Legion members on Friday, July 1. The motion called for members of council and the tourist committee to pay for thefrown expenses: Councillor John Doherty said the Legion hosted the Bay City delegation for three events and thatthe town would "look pretty cheap if it didn't pick up some of the tab and just relied on the Legion to entertain." While councillors paid for their own expenses at the reception last year, the town paid $600 to entertain the Bay City delegation. Deputy -reeve Jim Britnell said the "people of Goderich don't want to be pikers but the matter should be revieweekae if I name them all, I'll run Councillors Searls and out of ink. -Heather. Larsen.
