ONIP grant
for Inuseutn
The town of Goderich will proceed with application
to the Ministry of Municipal Airoirs and Mousing for
an Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement .Program
grant of M60,000, much of which. may be used for the
Huron County Pioneer Museum.
Administrator Larry McCabe said application will
be made for, an ONIP grant to complete work in a
northern section of town bounded by Anglesea Street
to the, north, St. Patrick Street to the south and Vic,.
toria and Wellington Streets on the east and West
respectively.
The application calls fOr $480,000 of the $600,000
grant to be used for social recreational purposes, the
repair or reconstruction of the museum. However,
McCabe cautioned council that the project might not
meet with the ministry's criteria and may be denied
because it will involve more than one ministry and
leasing arrangements will have to be finalized.
If the project is approved, the county will he asked
to support the project by contributing half of the
$480,000. If the project was funded for a second year,
it would inject nearly $1 million towards the museum.
But council is also playing it safe and made a
second application for ONIP funds in case the first
project is denied. The second application will com-
plete phase 3 of the West Side program with $150,000
scheduled to be used for the parks program and
$200,000 will be committed to roads. Over $200,000 will
be used for sewer work, public utilities and curbs and
sidewalks.
Deputy -reeve Jim Britnell told council that the
proposal will require the backing of county council.
He said the county will form a speclal committee at
• its February 3 meeting to investigate a future site for
a museum in the county.
