Senior Vikings hammer Exeter Panthers 94-35
Conference game provides little challenge for squad

The GDCI Vikings hammered the Ex-
eter South Huron Panthers here Friday, 94
- 35, in Huron -Perth Conference senior
boys' basketball. The game, the first since
the Christmas break for the Vikings, pro-
vided little challenge for coach Myles Mur -
dock's squad. The Vikings led 25 -10 after
one quarter, 49 -15 at half-time and 65 - 22
after three quarters of play..
All team members scored as Murdock
substituted liberally from his bench. Don
McCallum was the top Viking scorer with
24 points. Chris Starkey had a good game,
hitting for 15. Chris Pitre added 11 while
Scott Bell and Kevin Smith each hooped 10
points for Goderich. Daryl Madge checked
in with six points. Geof Chase, Paul Bren-
ner and Dave More had four points apiece
and Andrew Telford got two.
The win gives the Vikings a 2 -1 record in
league play going into this Friday night's
game in Stratford with the tough Nor-
thwestern Huskies.

Midget boysbasketball
team overpowers Exeter

The GDCI Midget Boys' Basketball
Team overpowered Exeter hh re, 81 - 41,
Friday.
The victory, the third consecutive in
Huron -Perth play, came as a result of a
strong team effort.
Todd Graham, the offensive leader of
the Vikings, hooped 21 points. John Empon
had 17 and Bab Barwick, who played a
strong game; had 12. Steve Bugler added
10 points, Baird Robinson had eight and
Juergen Scholtz got six. Joe Fitzpatrick,
Kevin Telford and Chris Srinth-each chip-
ped in with two points.
Mike O'Reilly led the St. Marys' effort
with 16 -points.
The Vikings travel to Stratford Friday
for their biggest test so far when they
tangle with the Northwestern Huskies.
Midgetboys' basketball
tourney here this weekend

The Annual Bluewater Classic Midget
Boys' Basketball Tournament will be held
at GDCI this Saturday:
The host GDCI Vikings tip off at 9 a.m.
against London South to open the tourney
which is divided into a two division round-
robin format with the top two teams in
each division playing off for thechampion-
ship. Other teams involved are Parkhill,
Sarnia St. Pats, London Medway and
Stratford Northwestern.
Action continues throughout the day
with the game to decide third place at 7
p.m. and the championship final at 8:30
p.m.
.Bantam houseleague teams
win two of three. games
Goderich -.bantam houseleague teams
won two of three games in exhibition play
this week.
In a game against Kincardine last week,
ScotiaBank score two goals in the opening
period and added single goals in the final
two periods as they defeated the Kin-
cardine Lions 4-0. Ron Todgham led the
ScotiaBank attack with two goals, both of
which came in the first period. David
Duncan scored the third Goderich goal in
the second period and Ron Chapman
scored the final goal in the third period.
In a game in Goderich Saturday,
Lucknow scored two goals in the final
period to defeat Goderich 4-2.
Lucknow led 2-0 after the first period but
Goderich got back in the game as Norm
McLennan scored the only goal of the
second period. Lucknow put the game
away outscoring Goderich 2-1 in the final

period. Tim Wilson scored the Goderich
goal in the third period.
In a game played here Sunday, Goderich
got a four -goal ,performance from Shawn
Larder as they nipped Strathroy 5-4.
Larder scored three straight goals as
Goderich led 3-0 in the first minute of the
final period. Strathroy roared back with
three goals of their own in less than a
minute to tie the game but Larder again
put Goderich ahead with his fourth goal
midway through the final period.
Norm McLennan scored the fifth
Goderich goal and Strathroy scored in the
final minute to produce the 5-4 final.
In exhibition play, Scotia Bank defeated
Garb and Gear 4-3 as Ron Chapman scored
three goals. Mark Cauchi scored the other
goal. Todd Nurse, Shawn Larder and John
Crawford scored one goal each for Garb
and Gear.

Junior Vikings have
three wins in three stare

The..GDCI Junior Vikings have three
wins in Three starts in Huron -Perth Con-
ference Boys Basketball following'their 78 •
- 22 victory over St. Marys here Friday.
The Vikings exerted steady pressure on
St. Marys throughout. Pete Conlon had a
strong game both ways, scoring 14 points
and leading , his team's defence. Dave
AAlmasihad 12 points for the Vikings: Daryl
Black hooped ten points in his first game
as a junior and completely dominated the
defensive boards. Andrew Carruthers also
had 10 points. Kevin Feagan added eight,
. Tim Bakker got six and ShaWn Rahbek,
Mike Brenner and John Thompsime had
four points each. Travis Bell and rant
Townsend rounded out •the Viking attack
with two points each.
.The Vikings led 36 -13 at the half.
The next start for • coach Lynn Meyers'
Vikings is Friday in Stratford against Nor-
thwestern.

Moore place first in
Skating Championshi
Debbie Horton .and her partner Curtis
Moore placed first in the Novice Dance
category this past weekend at the Cana-
dian Central Division Figure • Skating
Championships held at Timmins. About 80
skaters from Manitoba and northern and
south-western Ontario competed in .the
event, in which the top four in each
category advance to the Canadian Cham-
pionships starting February 2 in Montreal,
Debbie and Curtis advanced to the com-
petition with their gold medal placing at
the Western Ontario Sectionals held last
month in Sarnia.
• Debbie, 16, is the daughter of Everett
and June Horton of Goderich Mather pari
ner, Curtis, atso 16, is the son of Fra. anti
Jacklin Moore of AiVinghana, They ' have
skated: together for 4% years.
This year, Debbie. and Curtis have lived
and gone to school in"Toronto during the
week so they may be coached. bit Roy
Bradshaw at the Upper Canada Fikuiee
Skating Club. Miss Horton returns to
Goderich on the weekends where she helps
coach skaters at the Goderich Figure
Skating Club.
The Figure Skating Club of Goderich is.
holding a dance for Debbie this Saturday,
January 22 at the arena.
Juveniles rack up two wins
The Goderich Signal -Star Juveniles
racked up two more victories in Shamrock
League action this week disposing of
Strathroy 8-2 and defeating Lucan 4-1 in
LuclIn Sunday.
The victories improved the Stars' record
to 11 wins against five losses and two ties
in league play and they have compiled an
impressive record in preparation for the
playoffs.
. Coach Doug Cruickshank said he wasn't
sure what position the club was in
following the two wins but added that the
club was starting to roll with only three
genies t tin the-achedteleee - .
On Sunday, January 23 the Stars play in
Dorchester and theirnext home game is
Sunday,: February 6 against Belmont.
Game time is 2.30 p.m.
In the game against Strathroy the Stars
built up p 4-0 first period lead, added two
goals in the second period for a 6-0 lead'
after two periods and traded two goals
with the hpme team in the final period. Jeff
Sargent led the Stars offence with four
points on three goals and one assist. He
scored once in the first period and com-
plete the hat trick with two goals in the
third period in a five second span.
Phil Wood, John Peters, Paul McCar-
tney, Jim Young and Mark Crawford
scored one goal each for Goderich.
Crawford also assisted on five other goals
while linemate McCartney chipped in with
three assists.
Goaltender Dennis Kerr held Strathroy
scoreless until the final two minutes`of the
game as Strathroy scored twice in five
seconds.
In the game in Lucan Sunday the Stars
outscored the home team in every
category, pals and penalties.
Despite Ieadingurihe, penalty category,
the Stars matched Lucan's goatifrtbefirst
period, took the lead on, Dave Gallow's
goal in the second period and put the game
away with two goals in the final period.
Dave Gallow returned to action Sunday
and led the team offensively with two
goals. Phil Wood scored the first Goderich
goal and McCartney scored the final goal
of the game after converting a pass from
Crawford.
Midgets win two games

The Goderich Branch 109 Legion
Midgets • won two games last week.
Wednesday, in exhibition play, the Legion-
naires defeated the Listowel Cyclones 5 - 3.
Saturday, m a .regularly scheduled
Shamrock League game, the Legion team
hammered Exeter 10- 3.
The Goderich 'team played well in both
games and seems to be improving each
time out as theyear up for the upcoming
OMHA playoffs. gear will be the op-
position in the first round of playoffs which
begin early in February.
Against Listowel Trevor Erb led the
way with two goals and an assist. Todd Jef-
frey, Shawn Rahbek and Darren Creamer
notched the other Goderich- goals. Other
assists went•to Scott Stokes, Jeff McEwin,
Daryl Madge, John Thompson and Rob
Gibbons.
Goderich led 2 - 0 after the first period
and 4 - 2 after two. Each team scored once
in the final period.
The game with Exeter was sweet
revenge for the Legionna es. Last week
the Exeter team had edge Goderich 7 - 5
in Exeter but_this time co ch Larry Jef-
frey's squad left little doubt about which
was the better team.
John Thompson scored after only six
seconds of play and from there on it was
only a question of how many as the Legion-
naires built up a four goal lead before Ex-
eter came back with two goals. Goderich
• outscored Exeter 3 -1 in the second period
and seared three unanswered goals in the
final frame. The Legionnaires dJ o'pl'ayed
a very disciplined style of hockey, picking
up only four minor penalties compared to
Exeter's 12.
Darren Creamer played his best game of
the year, getting three of the Goderich
goals. Jeff McEwin added a pair while
singles went to Daryl Madge, Todd Jef-
frey, Doug Smith and_Grant

Leading in the assist column was Trevor
Erb with five. John Thompson and Grant
Garrow had two assists while Daryl
Madge, Doug Smith,Ken Huff, Pete
Willems and Brent Williamson had, one
each.
The Legionnaires have a busy week in
process. Monday they played in Ilderton,
Wednesday they journey to St. Marys and
Saturday they play at home at 8 p.m.
Penalties mar game

The Goderich Elevators Bantam hosted
Exeter Saturday in a faat-skating, hard-
hitting game marred with penalties. Ex-
eter scored their first goal;at the 13:57
mark while Goderich sOas short handed.
Ray Bedard made numerous saves but
allowed two more goals before the first
period ended.
Todd Wilson replaced Bedard in the
Goderich net at the beginningof the second:
period. Goderich 'kept the pressure on lad
were frustrated on numerous occasions by
the Exeter goalie. Even though both teams
had men advantages on different occa-
sions neither scored a goal.
In the third period Goderich played most
of the period short handed, drawing six
penalties to Exeter's one. Although they
tried hard and did some aggressive for -
checking they could not buy a goal while
Exeter was able to notch another and win
4-0. I'
Games are slated for Monday evening in
Ilderton, Wednesday night in St. Marys,
here Saturday against Parkhill, and
possibly a catch ' up game on Sunday
against•eithee St. Marys or Strathroy. We
will report on those games,next week and
would appreciate any support in atten-
dance at . our local game(s) on ,the
weekend.
Pee Wees hustle to 9-2 win.
The. Goderich Lions PeeWees displayed
great hustle, spirit and team play last
Saturday as they defeated Exeter 9-2.
For two periods the pace of the game
was fast and furious with end to end action
in which the Lions led 3-1.
In the third period the locals maintained
the intensity of their game while Exeter
wilted, and as a result the Lions tallied six
times to make a rout of the game.
The Lions goal -getters were Scott Gar -
row with three, Bill Trebisri with two, and
single goals for Larry Leppington, Bill
Whetstone and Jim Kelly.
Assists went to Garrow with three,
Whetstone also with three. Greg Alcock
had two and single assists went to Lepp-
ington, Darren Stanbury and Chris White.
The Lions played in Ilderton last night,
and have Parkhill here Saturday and St.
Marys on Sunday to round out a good week
of hockey.
Atoms win 6-3 over Lucan
The Goderich Machinist Atoms
displayed a total team effort for a come
frotn-behind victory over Lucan 6-3 on
Saturday in Lucan during Shamrock
League play.
Brian Lane opened up the scoring for
Goderich in the first period assisted by
Richard Bowman and Andre Cauchi.
However, Lucan came back ,. with three
straight goats and Goderich was trailing 3-
1 heading into the third period.
Undaunted, the local boys fought back
with five unanswered goals. Two of these
were scored by Brian Lane which gave
him a hatrtrick for the game. The others
were scored by Andre Cauchi, Richard
Bowman and Chris O'Neill. Shawn Talbot
and Cauchi each got two assists and Lane
got one.
On Sunday, the Goderich Atoms -.
travelled to Belmont for an exhibition
game. However, the Goderich team did not
play up to their usual standards and lost 9-
2. Goderich's two goals were scored by ,
Chris O'Neill assisted by Aaron Duck-
worth and Tim Harrison unassisted.
This Saturday, the local Atoms will
travel to Strathroy for a game there. They
still maintain their first place position in
their division of the Shamrock League.
