These photographs of the Point Farm Hotel and the Hotel
Goderich were found on two old post cards by Elva Gauley
of Goderich. The post cards are believed to be quite old
since both hotels have long ceased to exist.

Mayor Lee reported that 38
per cent of all the industrial
wages paid in Goderich in
1932 were .paid by the

mediates defeated Clinton 2-
1 in overtime in. a thrilling
hockey game.

Teachers exchange
Several teachers in the
Huron County Board of
Education system will be ap-
plying for exchanges.
At its Jan. 10 meeting, the
board approved the requests
to apply for the exchanges.
Harry Scott, vice-principal
and teacher at Seaforth
District. High School will ap-
ply for a three or six month
exchange to the United
States.
Hortense Pare of Robert-
son Memorial Public School
in Goderich will apply for an
exchange to Australia for the
1984 calendar year. .
The board also approved a
request that David Bender,
geography head at F.E.
Madill Secondary ' School
Winghain enroll in the
teacher funded leave plan as
of September 1, 1983. Mr.
Bender will receive 80 per
cent of his salary through to
1987 and receive the remain-
ing amount in his year of
leave being the • 1987-88
school year.
Flu closes hospital
WINGHAM -.The flu
epidemic which is sweeping
the area this winter has
forced the Wingham and
District Hospital to tem-
porarily suspend visiting on
the , first floor, and
discourage it in other areas.
Norman Hayes, executive
director said the hospital
took the action last week, on
the advise of the Medical
Advisory Committee, as a
precaution against further
infections being brought into
the wards.

One of the first official acts

Hirsch's contract
extended at Festival
Donald MacLeod,
President, has announced on
behalf of the Board of
Governors of the Stratford
Festival, the extension of
John Hirsch's contract, as
Artistic Director, to the 1984-
85 season. The negotiation
has been conducted through
the Continuity Committee of
the Board, chaired by
Professor Ronald Bryden of
Toronto.
In commenting on two
additional years of
leadership by John Hirsch,
MacLeod said the Board is
extremely pleased that Mr.
Hirsch will continue in 1984
and 1985 the outstanding
record established in the 1981
and 1982 seasons and excited
by the promise-indicatedby
plans he has announced for
the coming season. ,
Mr. MacLeod said, "Since
taking over the artistic
direction.. of the 'Festival;
formation of the
Shakespeare 3 Coinpany; the
securing of the funding for
this training project and
other Festival activities; the
appointment of associate
directors assuring the
continuity of the Festival;
the introduction of ancillary
programs such as the
celebrity lecture series; the
strengthening of the
Festival's administrative
organization; his launching
of a television program that
has resulted in CBC
television productions of four
Stratford plays to date, with
others to follow; tours of
productions which will in-
clude The Mikado touring
Canada;' the U.S. and
possibly England, transfer of
Festival productions such as
Translations which has been
seen in both Ottawa and

director named
Boris Brott, Principal

Philharmonic Orchestra,
and Principal Conductor of
the CBC Winnipeg
Orchestra, has accepted the
post of Artistic Director for
the 1983 Stratford Summer
Music Festival.
John Wilson, President of
Stratford Summer Music
said that' the internationally
acclaimed Vest conductor,
who has held positions ' as
Artistic Director with or-
chestras throughout Canada
and the United Kingdom,
will assume the Stratford
role effective immediately.
Mr. Wilson said, "I am

The little ones were to pick
a gift to open and take. the
others home to their own
tree. They were so excited
that when one of the
grownups edged them on to
open another and yet
another, first thing you knew
the room was three feet deep
in paper and bows with little
guys darting in and out - you
should have seen it.
Unbelievable! The big green
bag soon found the little ones
and the bedlam was
beautiful.
The dinner was a real feast
- a beautiful banquet and
everyone settled down - at
the table - no eating here and
then,! What a happy crowd -
the biggest day of the year. I
was
f raid we wouldn't get
down hi -'I just HAD to
make it! Now you know
WHY!
Monday everyone was
pooped.' It was Tuesday
before I really wakened up.
The noon weather map on TV
showed clear weather all the
way to Florida with lots of
storms coining from the west
coast. Suddenly. I decided it
was the best we could get
with Theatre London in this
capacity before accepting
his present position with
Orchestra London.
Mr. 'Eck, a
graduate of Harvard, iswell-
known throughout Canadaas
an arts administrator,
having served with, Theatre
London in this capacity

position with Orchestra
London.
Margaret Ryerson of
Stratford will be employed,
full-time at Stratford
Summer Music as
Administrative Director.
This year's Festival is the
third with which Mrs.
Ryerson has been involved,
handling production co-
ordination prior to the ap-
pointment just announced.
Before joining. Stratford
Summer Music, she was
Assistant to Robin Phillips in
Production and Casting at
the Stratford Festival -during
the latter part of a 14 -year
career „there.
In less than six weeks, the
- Board of Stratford Summer
Music has been successful in
raising in excess of $100,000
to offset the accumulated
deficit and assist with
operations. Program
planning is currently well
underway for Stratford
Summer Music's 1983
season, details of which will
be announced in the near
future.

and we were on our way
about three o'clock.
A poor time to start a long
journey - it meant another
night at a motel - but I
wanted. to get two or three
hundred miles out of Detroit
if possible.
We didn't quite make the
two hundred but we felt we
were out of the danger of any
snow. We did have frost on
the car next morning.
Friday early we were just
outside of Tampa - and
darned if I didn't miss the
No. 4 cut off again and we
had to travel the Gandy
Bridge and then the Skyway.
It was not too long ago that
we sat and watched the
tragic breakup of one side of
the .Skyway bridge and the
tragic deaths. And the fellow
that suddenly stopped at the
edge of the break and got out
and ran. In a minute or two
he slipped back and closed
the car door - you laughed
and cried while you watched
the T.V. It was really
traumatic.
You look at the Skyway
going up, up and UP! My
heart sank - and once again I
thought "We'll NEVER
To�in&Country

make it. But once you start,
the traffic Wallet, one'fane
I mean - they are usin8 half
the bridge - the road seems
to flatten out and suddenly
you've climbed up and over -
and I breathe a sigh of relief.
We wasted a good hour
before we were back on
Highway 75 and I droTie right
past Sarasota to Venice and
Doug and Madeline's I was
too tired to stop, unload the
car, and go on ..later to
Venice. We stayed three
days with them and their
family and we had another
wonderful Christmas. How
lucky can you get?
The car is more or less
unloaded now. I have had a
couple of painting lessons
and have shuffled - visited -
the stores gone to many
interesting spots nearby and
have had fun meeting all our
friends in the Park ALOHA!
The park that is!
So, now I think of all the
things I left undone and all
the things ahead I will try to
do. It is going to' be very
interesting.
