Industrial Curling League
Local 1863 maintains lead
By George Sutton
The highlight of the ninth week of
Goderich Industrial Curling was the battle
for second place.
Local 1863 maintains a one game lead
over three other hungry teams for this
prestigious position, but they came
perilously close to falling prey to this pack
in their contest with ' the Sifto Salt
"Maniacs". For the Maniacs, this game
resembled a condition known as Manic -
Depression.
• For most of the game, the Sifto foursome
was flying high in complete control of their
world and with a five point lead in their
game. Depression, however, hit without
warning as Local 1863 stars Charlie
Crawford and Jack Kellough finally got on
the same wave -length and the result was
two, three enders.
The Maniacs depression „ hit "rock"
bottom in the final end as Kellough's last
shot removed their rock and completed a
stunning comeback victory for Local1863.
• Two of the teams tied for third spot are
the GDCI Vikings and the Goderich Legion
and they met head-on in an exciting
match. The contest was a battle of youth
versus tradition and the Vikings upset
conservatives everywhere with a last shot
4 - 3 triumph.
Excellent curling ' was on display
throughout, this competition with Gerry
Walters standing out for' the Legion and
Scott Collins for the Vikings.
The Huron Health Unit has been quietly
moving up the standings and now shares
third place. Behind -the strong work of
John Orr and the impeccable leadership of
Jack MacKinnon the Health Unit inspected
and consequently condemned the Maitland
Golfers.
The Golfer's season continues to be a
wild roller -coaster ride from spectacular
success to disappointing defeat.,You know
you are in trouble" lamented losing skip,
Kay Duncan, "when the opposing skip
inadvertently doubles out two of his own
rocks and still wins the end."
Ed Brissette "led" the Super Shell team
to an impressive victory over Victoria and
Grey, then quickly,•rdiscounted" his value.
Honourary Super ,Sheller, Jim Mulhern
and the Edward duo followed Ed's
example and cut the floor out from under
their competition':
Victoria and Grey representatives
Brenda Tiechert and Cathy Hamilton even
resorted to 'new and acrobatic methods of
delivering their product but all to no avail.
Brissette, ,who is quicldy earning the

inclined* "J.R." around town promised
more of the same in the weeks ahead.
Chris Grafton and Larry Brown both
curled strong games for the Champion
office "Silver Brooms" but it was not
enough as all four members of the Sifto
Salt Evaporators enjoyed excellent games
and recorded an 8 to 2 win.
The early ends belonged to the Silver.
Brooms but key shots by Jan Ginn and
Mark Fischer in the fourth end turned the
game around and the remainder was all
Evaporators.
In a tremendous show of professional
solidarity, all three teacher teams lost.
The A.M. & G. Hospital emergency unit
operated with crisp precision as they first
anesthetized the GDCI Teacher No. 1
group and then proceeded to remove the
notion of victory from their psyche.
Superdad Jim 'Rourke was still on cloud
nine over the birth of son Ryan and
perhaps had his mind on things other than
curling. Proof of this might be the fact that
Papa Rourke was wearing rubber gloves
during the contest. Jim, you have to learn
to leave the work at the office! Opposing
skip George Sutton, on the other hand
curled as if he were suffering from ataxia.
The Lady Foresters avenged last week's
doss to the GDCI unit with a 7 - 5 triumph
over the GDCI Teacher No. 2 foursome,
this week. Bernice Moore showedmone of
the generosity of last week as she pon-
stantly negated the efforts of Dave "Big
Finger" loet with expert shots of her
own. Karen MacKinnon also had a strong
game for the victorious female Foresters
while spare Elaine Bertrand filled regular
Shelley Warr's blue jeans sniashingly.
'It was the Elementary Teachers turn to
face the juggernaut known as the
Foresters. True to the definition of
juggernaut, the Teachers were unable to
stop its progress and the Foresters
recorded their eighth win against one
solitary setback. Doug Yeo and Ron
Ritchie both fought fanatically to upset
this +powerhouse but in the end their
counterparts Jim Hawkins and Cam Bogie
left 'the club not only with the victory but
also with their opponents' money.
One might ask why a league would allow
such a group to remain. The answer is
'simple. Every once in a. while, the
Foresters show remarkable style and
taste. Last week this aspect was displayed
as they had enough sense to add a touch of
class to their team by adding Faye Ribey
to it. •
