(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) January 23-29 is Non -Smoking Week January 23-29, 1983, is Na- tional Non -Smoking Week. This special week is design- ed to help create a genera- tion of non-smokers by en- couraging smokers to quit smoking and non-smokers not to start smoking. More than _two million Canadians have' already, "kicked the habit". Many communities have passed by-laws restricting smoking in public places and today's movie stars no longer "light up" to portray sex and soptication. Feeling good and 1'iealthy lifestyle habits. are' becoming important parts of many people's lives. Eventually, cigarettes will follow the spitoon's disap- pearance from common use. However, we're not there yet. Forty percent of adult Canadians still smoke! How about focusing your attention on this major preventable health problem during National Non - Smoking Week. If you're a smoker, try to kick the habit - just for the health of it! The following activities might be useful "tools" when attemp- ting to quit smoking: + light up and smoke the cigarette using the opposite hand that you would normal- ly use + make a list of all the reasons (benefits) for quit- ting and read it every time you want a cigarette +_ put all smoking ac- cessories (ashtrays, mat- ches) in a "hard to get" Thanks for your support Dear Editor, We °would like to express our appreciation to your newspaper and to your readers for supporting our fund-raising campaign in 1982. It may be of interest to you to know that, as of December 31,1982, donations received total $28,001.45. Even though the campaign itself is drawing to a close, donations are gratefully received at any time, -and are always recognized with a tax-deductible, charitable receipt. • Thank you again for your support. Sincerely. Beverley A. Brown, Board Chairman, Town and Country Homemakers. 10" OFF ALL BOO Hardcover and Paperbacks place + hide your cigarettes in inconvenient places + use a jar for ashes rather than an ashtray to re- mind you of how dirty the habit it + start an exercise pro- gram that requires lots of breathing - it could provide an incent"i"ve to improve breathing capacity by quit- ting smoking. + avoid' situations where you would usually have a cigarette, ie., lave the table when finithed eating and C for aryalk, doodlc„while o the phone rather, than ha '•'`g a cigarette '” ;, + when you get aii urge to smoke, delay hay 'ng a cigarette for at le st •one for the Mo, `th of JA a ARY Pre rip+ion for Cabin fever: e p warm,, drink plenty 'o f li4uids, and become engrossed in Jour atfk supple of_books books J 0 BESIDE THE POST OFFICE aivOlon Army:says .Deer Editor, On behalf of The Salvation Army and the scores of pea, ple who were helped during tkel oliday, sees, fwant to say "tbaflk Your to the fenerous citizens who gave inancial• assistance to our Decemberapeal. minute - the delay sometimes allows time for the urge to go away + keep a card in your • cigarette ti package arid record the time, place- and circumstances for' each cigarette smoked. lase this to determine where and why you smoke. These boats were cedar strip, with twin gaff -rigged sails, pen cockpit and centreboard. 1 am especially interested in any information about two specific boats, the FROLIC,. formerly owned by Arthur E. Tatham and the KEYOSHK, once owned and sailed by F.G. Miller of Wiarton. Both boats are pic- tured in a book entitled The Canadian Lake Region by Wilfred Campbell (Musson, Toronto: 1910). They are known to have raced in regatta at Oliphant around 1900, and the FROLIC t least called Port Elgin hey home for many years when owned by A.E. Tatham.
