But when a person reports his health is just so-so, it should signal doctors and nurses to be "a little more attentive" because the per- son is at high risk, Mossey said in an interview from Philadelphia, where she's on staff at Temple University School of Medicine. Mossey, an epidomiol®gist, was on staff at the University of Manitoba, where her col- league Evelyn Shapiro still works, during the late '70s when they did the study. The scientists have several interpretations of the link between your rating of your own health and death. One of them is that the per- son who doesn't smoke, drink only moderately and gets enough exercise, good nutrition and rest may have a more positive view of their own health, while the reduc- ed risk may be due to these good habits. Another is that even if in fact the person's health status is not terrific, there's something protective in positive, optimistic feelings. Mossey says she has a gut feeling "those who are characteristically optimistic may do better," but she cau- tions there's no scientific data to •support that impres- sion so far. A sure way to feel good about your health is to be a no cooker. And if you want het to quit smoking - on your own - ask the Bruce, Dufferin, Grey Lung Assoc. 836 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound, Ont.
