, • The spectacle of an elephant rolling
down a precipice head over heels
.must be a rare and exciting scene.
Such esight came, within the experi-
'once of a British officer en India
charged with the conduct of an estab-
lishment which included -the capture
-and care of elephants.
This officer anti a large body of
native servants were taking a herd of
elephants through the country when
they came to the foot of a steep ascent
in which was a pass where they could
go only in single file and which took
much time to get over.
The officer saw that they shnuld be
kept for hours if this were the only

One elephant, Banda, wee leading
the officer's beast being second at the
time, when a large portion of earth

gage way and, with a bellow of fright,
the unlucky Banda slid down some
yards' and then rolled over and over
five distinct times down the steep
gra.ss hill and stopped short just by a
deep ravine at the bottom.
It was a wonderful sight to see an
elepbant, toes up, making such a roll.
The mahout saved himself by jump-
ing off when the earth slipped and
clinging to the grass. The officee
sprang froin his elephant instantly.
As Bunda made no sound when he
get to the bottom the officer feared
that -ere must he killed. There was a
great smashing of pots and pans dur-
ng his roll, for Buticia carried the
native doctor's effects, among vehich
were his live stook, consisting of eight
duelcs.
Looking down the long lane of grass
he officer was eelieved to see Banda
getting" to his feet; his gear was left
half way, the girth ropes having
broken, His mahout, like many na-
ives when suddetly coefronted by
danger or difficulty, had quite lost his
