Minister James Snow ex-
pressed his disappointment
in the snowmobile statistics
for the • 1981-'82 winter
season.
"With the total of 811 colli-
sions reflecting a 20.5 per
cent • crease over '80-'81's
673, s purely a sign of ,
carelessness and disobe-
dience', of the law. And, this
cannot be tolerated," he
said. .
"Especially, when )fiu
read accident reports involv-
ing a snowmobile, stating,
'snow vehicle operator drove
into barbed !vire fence cat -
citing the operator across the
face ... operator not wearing
helmet and had been drink-
ing ... driver 16 - killed.'
• "Reports such as -this real-
ly hit home, that's why my
ministry endorses the
snowmobile driver training
courses • ' and urges
bnowntobilers tatake advan-
tage of it."
_ Recent amendments to the ,.
Motorized Snow Vehicle Act
— steps..up-thesafety- regula.,
Hons. Drivers of
snowmobiles on the newly
defined "trails" must be at
least 12 years old and hold a
.,now vehicle operator's
licence or if over 16 a valid
driver's licence. And liabili-
ty and the wearing of
helmets will be mandatory
whenever •operating a
snowmobile.
Anyone operating
snowmobile on their own
property is exempt. "
"It seems that no matter
how strict the laws are or.
how much emphasis is plac-
ed on safety i deaths and in-
juries continue," he said.
There were 25 'people kill-
ed this season as compared
to 21 last year. Personal in-
jury collisiOns increased 27.3
per cent from 410 to 522 and
the number ..of persons in-
jured increased 25 per cent
• from 513 to 641.
Alcohol played a big role
this past season with 11 out
of the 23 operators killed
drinking or impaired.
"People must remember
snowmobiles are like any
other motor vehicle and
should be treated as such,"
said Snow. "You cannot
drink and drive whether it's
a car or a motorized 'SnO*
vehicle."
-
"And; if people -learn
more about safe snowmobile
operation, perhaps in the
years to come accident
statistics will decrease."

Junior girls' ringette team
loses two games and wins
one in Seaforth tournament
The Junior Girls' Ringette team had a
busy holiday season, playing in a tourna-
ment at Seaforth on December 29 and a
home game January 2.
The Seaforth tournament provided lots
of competition with two teams each from
London and Kitchener and teams from
Brussels, Seaforth, Howick and Goderich.
Goderich entered the `13' round when
they lost their first game 12-5 to London
Number one. Goderich goals were scored
by Vicky Vanderburgh (2) and Mary
Michelle Morrissey (3).
They continued on after winning their se-
cond game 9-4 against Howick. Players
scoring goals were Deb O'Brien (1), Vicky
Vanderburch (3). Stacey Rean (2), Tam-
my Talbot (1), Angie Chisholm (1) and
Mary Michelle Morrissey (1).
Unfortunately they lost their last game
against Kitchener with a score of 10-6.
Vicky Vanderburgh led the scoring with
three goals while Mary Michelle Mor-
rissey picked up two and Stacey Rean
scored a single.
The Sunday home game was a 9-7 vic-
tory over Seaforth. Vicky Vanderburgh
scored two goals, Stacey Rean scored
three and Katherine Murphy, who usually
plays defence, came forward to play cen-
tre and scored four goals. Good work girls!
• No teanrcan make it without their goalie
and Sheila Donnelly deserves a "'Nat on the
back" for her continued excellence as a
first year goalie.
At this time, the team and coaches would
like to say "thank yOu" to the Goderich
Lions Club for their continued support.
Lions Pee Wees drop both
their games in Silver Stick
• For the past couple of years, the Silver
Stick Pee Wee Hockey Tournament has not
been a successful stomping ground for.
Goderich and this year "was no exception
• as the Lions dropped both games, .6-4 to
• Mooretown and 5-4 to Leamington'. The
Lions played very intensive, hockey in both
. contests and could just have easily won
. both games.
In the Mooretown game, the locals had
to play catch-up hockey as they spotted
their opposition four goals in the first five
minutes. Goderich,got three straight goals
of their own in the second period to narrow
• the gap but the bad start turned out to be
too much to overcome for the rest of the
game. Bill Whetstone with two goals, one
assist, Scott Garrow with one goal, two
assists, Bill Trebish with a goal and
Darren Stanbury with an aseist were the
Lions' point getters in this game.
Against Leamington in a very even
contest, the number of hit goal posts
turned out to be the deciding factor in the
defeat. In a very fast and exciting game,. ' •
the Lions had leads of 1-0 and 3-2 in a see-
saw contest. With the score tied 4-4at the •
end of the second period, LeaMington •
tallied at 5.27 of the third and this goal held
up for the winner. Scott Garrowhad the
hat -trick for Goderich in this 'game with
Bill Trebish tallying the. fourth goal to
account for the goals scored.' Byron
Bowman had two assists while Greg
Alcock and Darren Stanbury had On assist
each. .
The Lions' next outing will be January 5
in Exeter before 'travelling to the Legion
tourney January 3mn Ripley.
Novice team wins one and
loses one in New Hamburg
The Goderich Garb and Gear Novice
team_ participated in the New Hamburg
Novice Tournament December 27, winning
their first game in convincing style against
Beydges 1=1 and narrowly losing their
second against Acton 1-0:
In the game against Mt. Brydges, Ian
Bowman and Todd Papple each scored two
goals while singles went to Jason Cook,
Mark Phillips and Jason Jeffrey. Jamie
Stanley had two assists with single assists
° going to Chad Papple, Mark Phillips, Drew
McCauley, Don Rivers and Ian Bowman.
In the game against Acton, the Goderich
team kept the puck in Acton's endmost of - -
the game but were unable to put one by an
excellent goaltender who stopped shot
after shot. Acton's...lone goal scored at the
4:34 mark of the second period proved to
be. the winner as the local boys were
unable to get the equalizer.
' • The Garb and Gear Novices plat their -
next game this Saturday against St. Marys •
• on home ice. On Sunday they will travel to
• Exeter for a game.
