Machinist Atoms win runnenup trophy in Silver Stick tourney
The Goderich Machinist At0MAI received
the 'A'. division runner-uptrophy in the
Silver Stick tournament on Sunday in
Forest. After winning two genies en
Wednesday, December 29 to advance to
the 'A' championship finals, the local boys
lost to Mooretown 6-3 Sunday.
The ilotletich team seemed to have
trouble getting organized in the first
period and Mooretown had them 4-0 by the
beginning of the second period. When
Goderich finally started to fight back,
Mooretown's early lead proved to be too
much.
Tim Harrison put Goderich' on the
scoreboard first with an assist from Andre
Cauchi and Brian Lane near the end of the
second period. Halfway through the third
period, defenceman Richard Bowman
scored Goderich's second goal unassisted,
bringing the Goderich team within two of a
tie. Hopes were dashed however when
Mooretown scored another goal 30 seconds
later. Bowman scored his second
unassisted goal for Goderich at the ten
minute mark of the third period but
Mooretown was able to keep Goderich
from scoring any more and with less than
a minute left to go, they popped in their
sixth goal while Goderich played a man
short due to a penalty.
Coach Steve Buchanan said he felt his
team was just as good as the Mooretown
team but failed to play up to their full
potential. He praised defenceman Richard
Bowman whom he said controlled the play
whenever he was on the ice.
Bowman also played a big role in
Goderich's second win against Petrolia on
Wednesday. As well as playing excellent
defence, he scored the last two goals of the
game to give Goderich a final score of 6-4.
Goderich was off to a quick start against
Petrolia. At the 1:23 mark of the first
period, Brian Lane scored on an assist
from Tim Harrison and Jeff Hodges. Ten
seconds later they went ahead by two when
Shawn Talbot scored on an assist from
Andre Cauchi and Lane. Petrolia came
back with one but Goderich got, on the
scoreboard again before the end of the first
period, this time on a goal by Lane assisted
by Cauchi and Talbot.
Petrolia scored in the second period and
again 12 seconds into the third period to tie

thhigs up. They went ahead on their next
goal but Goderieh came back with three
straight goals to produce the win. The first
of these three was scored by Tim Harrison
on an assist from Jason Pearson. The last
two were scored by Riehard Bowman
unassisted, the final one into an -empty net
when Petrolia pulled their goalie.

In their opening game of the Silver Stick
tournament on Wednesday, Goderich
defeated -Sarnia Township 6-4. Mark
Armstrong of Sarnia Township, r who
played for the Goderich Novices last year
. when his family lived here, assisted on one
goal in the game and later in the tour-
nament, he won a most valuable player
award.
Tim Harrison opened the scoring for
Goderich on an assist from Chris O'Neill.
Sarnia Township tied things up by the end
of the first period and went ahead, on a goal
at the beginning of the second period.
• Goderich then came back with three goals
in a row, two in the second period and one
•
at the beginning of the third. These were
scored by Harrison unassisted, O'Neill
unassisted and Brian Lane assisted hr
Richard Bowman.
Sarnia Township then got on the
scoreboard again but Goderich came
,•-%back, this time with two in, a row. These
were scored by Jeff Hodgeajin an assist
from Harrison and O'Neill and Andre
Cauchi unassisted. Sarnia Township got
the final goal of the game at the 0:26 mark
of the third period.
The Goderich Machinist Atoms play
their next game against Ilderton this
Saturday on home ice. They are currently
in first place in their Shamrock League
