The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-12-15, Page 3Wallace acclaimed as board
By Stephanie Levesque
No opposition faced the immediate past chairman
and vice-chairman of the Huron County Board of
Education as they were renamed to their position at
the board's inaugural meeting.
Dorothy Wallace of Goderich and Eugene Frayne
of RR 3 Goderich will sit another term as chairman
and vice-chairman respectively. They were acclaim-
ed at the new board's December 6 meeting in Clinton.
As is common practise at inaugural meetings, each
board member gave a declaration of office and swore
an oath of allegiance. This followed the invocation by
the Reverend Norman Pick of Ontario Street United
Church in Clinton. The benediction was given by the
Reverend John Pluta of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic
Church, Clinton.
Personal greetings from MPP Murray Elston
(Huron -Brice) and Huron County Warden Harold
Robinson noted a return to basics in education. They
were referring to Minister of Education Bette
Stephenson's response last week to the Secondary
Education Review Project (SERP) in which she said
there will be more compulsory subjects and greater
emphasis on standards and testing. Mr. Elston also
brought greetings from Huron -Middlesex MPP Jack
Riddell. A letter from MP Murray Cardiff was read
by director of education John Cochrane.
Warden Robinson leveled criticism at the board for
hiring "10 to 12 teachers to take on special ohildren".
He was referring to gifted children who, in the
warden's school days, skipped a grade. Additional
teachers hired by the board this year are actually for
special education which deals with students having
learning difficulties.
Robert Shackleton of the regional office of the
Ministry of Education in London brought greetings
from his office. Referring to comments made about
getting back to the basics of education, Mr.
Shackleton said he has toured 'Huron schools and
didn't think they had left the basics in education. The
ministry representative presented chairman Wallace
with a copy of The Education Act and Bill 46 - the
most recent amendment to the act.
Committee chairmen were also named at the in-
augural meeting. Joan Van den Broeck of Saltford
was named as education committee chairman and.
past personnel committee chairman John Elliott of
Blyth was renamed to the position. Immediate past
chairman of the management committee, Frank
Falconer of RR 5 Clinton, lost his bid to head the com-
mittee again over a former committee chairman.
Murray Mulvey of RR 1 Clifford will head the
management committee.
All committee chairmen and Mrs. Wallace and Mr.
Frayne will sit on the board's executive committee
