BACK
75 YEARS AGO
Last Tuesday afternoon
there was an exciting time at
the West Street roller rink,
the event being a seven and
one half hour contest for the
world's championship race.
There were nine entries with
D. Wiggins covering 103
miles and winning first
money, $15.
The Goderich Business
College enjoys a provincial
reputation for adopting the
most modern office work.
Their latest acquisition is the
loose leaf ledger now used by
up-to-date wholesale houses.
The statutory meeting of
council was held Monday.
The finance company
presented a report recom-
mending that council agree
to furnish water and lights to
the military encampment
which it is proposed will be
held here in June next on the
Attrill farm and also agree to
pay the rental for two weeks
of $600:

A red-hot contest for the
-1943 wardenship of Huron
County is already in
progress. The race is bet-
ween Reeves Alex McDonald
of Ashfield Township and
Raymond Redmond of East
Wawanosh.
Town council has ap-
pointed Emerson Overholtto
succeed A.E. Jennings as
police sergeant.
Both Colborne and West
Wawanosh townships are
sending new men to the
County Council as a result of
Monday's polling. In
Colborne, Reeve Thom was
defeated by Alex Watson. In
West Wawanosh, Brown
Smyth moved up from
councillor to reeve,
defeating Reeve Thomas
Webster.
25 YEARS AGO
On. Monday, 1,742 voters -
92 less than last year -turned
out to elect a deputy -reeve,
six councillors and two
members of PUC. Ernie C.
Fisher was elected mayor by
acclamation. James M.
Donnelly was elected reeve
by acclamation. Peter S.
MacEwin was elected
deputy -reeve by a majority
of '120 votes. And Mrs. May
Mooney, seeking election for
the first time, headed the
polls among councilors.
Fire loss here in the past
year amounted to only $200,
according to a recent report
presented to town council by
the Goderich Fire Brigade.
Donations for needed
furnishings for the new wing
of Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital have
started to come in as the
building is just about ready
for occupancy. Although
more than $6,000 in donations
have come ,in within the last
week, the sum of about
$27,000 is still required.

Sunday harness racing will•
become a permitted activity
in Goderich in 1978. This
decision was made Monday
evening by Goderich town
count --ii fter-r-eprr ntatives--
of the Goderich Trotting
Association a8ked for an
amendment to by-law 51 of
1968 to allow the rating.
A $til,11 recational area
at the south-east corner 'of
Bennett and Eldon Streets
received approval of
oderich town council
Monday evening.
The Huron County Board
,,r Education and its
elementary school teachers
agreed to the terms of a 1977-
78 contract for the teachers
Tuesday night when the
teachers voted to accept the
latest board offer of a 5.12
per cent increase.
