'n About
with Martha
The folks already settled
in the warm areas of this
North America just wouldn't
believe the great November
we have had.
I really enjoyed it - warm
sunny days and fantastic
sunsets; sunsets that last
long enough for you to take a
deep breath and sit back and
enjoy it for about an hour. I
may be stretching it but the
skies were beautiful. So
many people have garden
flowers still blooming and
others acting like they
thought Spring was here - the.
flowers, that is! For this we
are grateful.
We are looking forward to
Christmas in Windsor, or at
least Don and Fran's pre-
' Christmas gathering of the
Children nine grown up and
11 "younguns" - plus one not
here yet. Now with, grand-
parents and GREAT grand-
parents there also, that
makes for a houseful.
Fran is in her glory - and
well she should be. She loves
to bake and set up a big din-
ner. Don is underfoot - but
helping. Things happen so
fast once the .children start
:arriving, it is a bedlam.
Everyone ,is so glad to see
the others — it's probably
two or three weeks since
they were swimming
together!
With a large family, it isn't
fair to the little ones to take
them away from their new
toys and other excitement.
So, Don and \Fran - after
about the fourth or fifth -
wquld not take their children
out that day. Oh, others were
very welcoine to come over -
but they liked being home on
Christmas. So along with
other nice traditions, this is
one that sticks. So now most
of the kdsare married, they
advise their family to keep
their little''ones home as they
• have done. •
So Sunday before
Christmas is Gram and
Grampa's Christmas for the
family and it is wonderful.•
All these years, we were
always there on Christmas,
too. • We did not know at the
tithe that presents were not
opened until.we made.an•ap-
pearance - and they were
warned to not waken us..But
amongmy happy memories
aha `group. etgreitil'u5s lined
up at the foot of our.bed twit-
tering-
wittering like little birds - but
NOT waking us!
I just hope you have the
same pleasure. It warms you
in your winter years.
With Doug and Madeline
and their brood of five, we
spent a few happy
Christmases - mostly after
they had moved to Florida.
Before that, they were in dif-
ferent corners of the world at
Christmas time. Theirs, too,
were really exciting
Christmases and usually.the
children each had a friend at
dinner, so you can see how .
that rounded out the table.
So we have had many,
many merry Christmases. I
can only hope yours can be
as wonderful.
Love,•Martha.
Support
seals
New generations continue
old traditions in special
ways. And this year's
Christmas Seals celebrate
the 82nd anniversary of the
Lung Associations in
Canada.
-The seals originally were
used to raise money to com-
bat tuberculosis in children.
The children of today have
never seen scenes that swept
the nation early in. the twen-
tieth century. Then, dying
children lay in • their
mother's arms coughing up
blood. Entire families were
wiped out by a monster
disease called tuberculosis.
In 1900, the average
lifespan was only 47 years.
TB and other infectious
diseases cut life brutally
short. By 1981 that span had
soared to over 73 years.
By creating Christmas
Seals, lung associations pro-
vided a way for everyone, of
however little means, to join
• the fight against the monster
dease: 'i his "enormous fe
fort by dedicated volunteers
to rally a nation against a
single killer had never been
— -attempted before. The story
--—of—the—fight—against,-is one-
of
neof the triumphs of our cen-
tury.
This - year's Christmas
Seals support the ongoing
fight against lung disease
and its current causes, in-
cluding cigarette smoking
and air pollution. To con-
tinue that fight, and a Cana-
dian tradition, answer your
Christmas Seal letter. "It's a
matter of life and breath."
