GDCI junior girls' basketball team
eliminated in "AA" championships
BY TD
The GDCI junior girls' basketball team
was eliminated in the WOSSA "AA"
championships in Sarnia Friday by
London Catholic Central, 45-42, in over-
time.
Catholic Central went on to win their
side of the tournament draw, but lost the
championship to Sarnia St. Pat's, 39-25, in
the championship game.
The Vikings led Catholic Central 14-2 in
the first quarter, but the Goderich girls
missed several layups following steals that
could have put the game on ice. C.C.H.
battled back, gradually reducing the
Vikings' lead. Goderich led 14-8 after one
quarter, 23-19 at half-time and 30-29 after
three quarters. The game was tied 42-42 at
the end of regulation time, but it was the
Vikings who had to fight back to force the
lvertime. They trailed by six in the fourth
quarter, but Kim Fritzley, the Vikings' top
player in the tourney, ran in three suc-
cessive layups to tie the score and force
the overtime session. C.C.H. got the only
point of the overtime on a foul shot to take
the victory.
Kim Fritzley had a total of 27 points for
the Vikings. Kara Ryan was London's best
with 13 points.
Christine Stapleton had five points for
the Vikings while Cathie Gallow and
Tammy Gibbons had four each. Mary
Murphy added two. points to the Goderich
total.
Coach Phil Bugler felt the play of his
Vikings was adversely affected by the long
layoff his team has had since winning the
Huron Perth championship two weeks ago,
but he was extremely proud of the effort
put forth by the GDCI team.
Pee Wees win one but lose two on weekend
The Goderich Lions Pee Wees completed
a strenuous weekend by winning one and
losing two to bring their season record to
seven wins and four losses.
On Friday night the Lions were com-
pletely dominated by Parkhill, losing 12-5.
Goderich fell behind 5-0 early and rallied
to make it 5-4 before Parkhill went on to
make it a rout. Bill Trebish and Scott
Garrow had two goals apiece while Bill
Whetstone scored a. single for the Lions.,
Assists went to Greg Alcock with two and
Garrow, Jeff Boyce, Darren Stanbury and
Chris White with one each.
Saturday night action saw the Lions shut
out Ilderton 3-0 in a fast paced game. Scott
Garrow scored three short-handed goals to
account for the Lions scoring. Assists went
to Greg Alcock and Larry Leppington.
Tom Durnin recorded the shut out.
In a hotly contested game on Sunday, the
Lions faltered in the first three minutes by
having three goals scored against them by
Strathroy who went on to defeat the locals
8=4. Strathroy led 3-1 after the second
period but before the third period was a
minute old, the Lions had tied the score at
three. The game stayed close until the
final few minutes when the opposition took
control of the game. Scott Garrow had two
goals for Goderich with single markers to
Larry Leppington and Jim Kelly. Single
assists went to Jordon Grasby, John
Strickland and Bill Whetstone.
This Saturday the Lions will be hoping to
keep their legs for the whole game as they
do battle with Strathroy again before going
to Ilderton on Tuesday.

Bantams lose to Parkhill but out -shoot Ilderton
Goderich Elevator Bantams journeyed
to Parkhill Friday evening to face their
rivals for the third time.
The first period was an evenly matched
contest but it was Parkhill who seemed to
have the breaks. Although • Ray Bedard
made many stops, he was unlucky on two.
The .second period was one-sided as
Parkhill added four more goals with ex-
cellent passing and team play. Goderich
failed to present any threat except for one
occassion when Darren Doak and Kevin,
Telford found that if they passed the puck
back and forth to one another, they could •
work it down to the opposition's end.
Starting the third period and down 6-0,
the Goderich boys started pressing hard.
Richard Boddy was robbed on one oc-
cassion as was Chris Sideris. Parkhill
scored again shortly after the period
began. Midway through the period, Kevin
Talbot picked up a rebound from a shot by
Darren Doak and popped it into a top
corner. A minute later, Parkhill notched
theireighth goal and at the time, they were
two men short.
Except for the strong play of Chris
Sideris, Brian Chambers and Kevin
Telford, the score could have been even
greater. Goderich drew eight minor
penalties during the game and Parkhill
had five.
On Saturday, Goderich hosted Ilderton
at the local arena- in a fast, action -filled
game:The. first period was scoreless as
Todd Wilson and his counterpart in the
Ilderton net made some outstanding saves.
Mark Burbine started the ball rolling for.
Goderich in the second period as he drifted
a long hard slapshot from outside the blue
line that eluded the Ilderton goalie. Five
minutes later, Kevin Talbot scored,
assisted by Darren Doak and Kevin
Telford,' making the score 2-0. Ilderton
came back with two quick goals to make it
a tie.
The Goderich boys kept pressing and
before the period ended, Sideris sank one
in from the blue line and Jim Beattie
scoredon a pass from Richard Boddy. A
strong periodof hockey was played by
Kevin Telford and Darcy McGee.
•
The third period belonged to Goderich,
controlled by the fine playing of Chris
Sideris. Matt Wilkinson scored, assisted by
Darren Doak, and Jim Beattie netted his
second goal, assisted by Sideris and Dave
Telford.
The Goderich boys out -hustled and out-•
shat Ilderton by a wide margin as they
pulled together as a team. OnIy five
penalties were assessed in the entire
game, two to Goderich• and three to
Ilderton.

Sifto teams have big wins
BY GEORGE SUTTON
The fourth week of Goderich Industrial
League•Cur'ling was warm and wonderful
for some and damp and miserable for
others.
High on the list of the warm and won-
derful group were the representatives of
Sifto Salt. Both Sifto teams produced big
wins.
The Sifto Evaporators got their first
taste of victory by giving the GDCI
Teacher no. 2 foursome their first taste of
defeat 5 to 4. The determined Evaporators
took a quick lead on some fine shooting by
Jan Ginn but were forced to beat off a
spirited comeback effort by an obviously
"burned out" teacher unit .\ Tim Colwell
was particularly sharp in the final ends to
secure the triumph.
The more experienced Sifto Salt
"Maniacs"' also made a teacher group
their victim as they downed the
Elementary Teachers 7 to 3. Ralph Brown
and Tim McGrail seemed to enjoy the
"teacher bashing" more than anyone as
they rarely missed an opportunity to make
the elementary educators miserable.
Through it all, Donalda Macdonald
remained calm, cool, collected and classy
despite the obvious temptation to send the
entire Sifto unit to the corner.
Examination fatigue showed on the
faces of the GDCI Vikings as they battled
with the flashy- and fresh Victoria and
Grey contingent.
The Vikings were never in the contest
despite a yeoman's (look it up) efforts by
Mark Jeffrey and Paul Bogie. V&G
regulars Teichert, Denomy and Arm-
strong were aided by import and brother-
in-law of Brenda Teichert, Terry
Theriault. The 10 to 3 final was a credit to
the ever -improving V&G foursome but it
was clear that the Vikings had other
"credits" on their mind.
It looked like education was going to
flunk out entirely on this night as the GDCI
Teacher no. 1 squad fell behind 5 to 0 in
their battle with the "paraful" Maitland
Golfers. A few great efforts by Bill Worsell
and Doug Bundy combined with fickle ice
and lucky rolls, however, turned the game
around in the middle ends and the GDCI
foursome squeaked out an 8 to 7 victory.
Lynn Todgham and Susan White were
calm, cool, collected and . classy, all
evening though they were' heard to remark
about sending someone to "the far corners
of the earth."
Entrepreneur Edward Brissette (alias
Edwina Brissette) has a philosophy: "The
family that curls together, ' stays
together!" That idea was put to the test
this night as Ed and family fell prey to a
union of a different sort, Local 1863.
Union skip, Jack Kellough opened up to
this reporter and revealed his philosophy
of life: "It they put it in the house, take it
out; if they put it out front, draw behind
it."
Words to live by! The very close contest
that ended in a 6 to 5 win for the unionists
made it difficult to tell which philosophy
was superior but it might be noted that
Ardithe, Brenda and Dave left without Ed.
Tom Profit was tremendous as the
Legion team won a hard fought battle with
the M.A.S.H. unit from AM&G Hospital.
Profit's broom boomed throughout the
night and the noise from his crisp takeouts
could be heard in Seaforth.
Remarkably, the short-handed reps of
our hospital were able to withstand
Profit's onslaught and take the game tied 6
to 6 into the final end. Richard Ottewell's
draw weight was almost letter perfect all
night while Marty Bond and Roger Bois
each had moments of glory, be it all too
fleeting.
The final 10 to 6 score should tell you
something. Since Tom is only allowed two
rocks to an end, either John Anderson, Jim
Bell or 'Gei'rq ',Walters, must. have con-
tributed something to the victory too.
There was good and bad news for
followers of the Foresters' saga. The men
won; the women did not.
Laurie Paquette and John Orr, known
affectionately around the club as the "Odd
Couple", were excellent for the Huron
Health Unit as they overpowered the Lady
Foresters 12 to 4. Barb Lassaline and Vicki
Culbert represented their organization
with style but HHU skip Jack MacKinnon
never let up. In fact, his agressiveness.
resulted in a four point final end and
prompted Karen MacKinnon to remark,
"Is he never satisfied?"
The Foresters win left them all alone in
first place with the only perfect 4 and 0
record in the league. The latest victim of
"Bogie's . Bashers" was the Champion
Office "Silver Brooms". Skip Paul
Mulligan can take a little comfort in the
fact that every skip involved. in Industrial
League Curling has been in his shoes at
least once after facing the "awesome"
Foresters.
Novices tie Lucan team
Goderich's Garb and Gear Novice team
recorded a one -one tie with Lucan on home
ice during Shamrock League play
Saturday.
Lucan opened up the scoring early in the
first period. The tying goal from Goderich
didn't come until half way through the
third period with Jared Whalen scoring,
assisted by Jason Jeffrey and Ian
Bowman.
The local Novice team will travel to
Strathroy Saturday for a game.
Atoms still in first place
,The Goderich MachinistAtoms are still
in first place m the Shamrock League
division after a convincing win against
their closest rivals.on home ice Saturday.
The local boys defeated Strathroy 7-0
and goaltender Pat Donnelly recorded the
shut -out; coming up big with several key
saves.
Goderich opened the scoring just 42
seconds into the first period with an
unassisted goal by Chris O'Neill, the
team's newest player. O'Neill is going to
prove a valuable asset to the team as he
went on to score two more goals in the
Midgets split
BY TI)
The Goderich Legion Branch 109
Midgets split a pair of Shamrock League
hockey games on the weekend, defeating
Ilderton here 5-4 Saturday, but losing 3-1 to
Parkhill Sunday in Parkhill.
The Legionnaires' victory over Ilderton
was a hard-fought come oin= hirid
Ilderton had a 3-1 lead in the second period
but Goderich came back with two goals to
send the teams into the final period
deadlocked at three goals each.
Ilderton got the go-ahead goal at the two
minute mark, but the Legionnaires tied it
on a goal by Pete Willems at the 8:31 mark
and then Todd Jeffrey' got the winner less
than a minute later on a goal -mouth
game fora hat -trick.
Other Goderich goals were scored by
Jeff Hodges, Richard Bowman, Tim
Harrison and Andre Cauchi. Hodges and
Harrison each got two assists with singles
going to Lonnie Rurnig, O'Neill And
Bowman.
Although the Atoms played extremely
well offensively, they were excellent
defensively as well, allowing only 13 shots
on their own net compared to Strathroy's
33.
The Goderich Machinist Atoms will play
host to Lucan here this Saturday at 4 p.m.
pair of garner'

Brent Williamson, who had a strong_ _
game offensively for Goderich, got two. 1
other Legion goals. Trevor Erb was the
other Goderich goal -getter.
In Parkwore—loQke4 n- n i p -
battle. The teams were tied 1-1 after the
first period, with Daryl Madge scoring the
Goderich goal on passes from Jeff McEwin
and Shawn Rahbek. Parkhill scoied.once
more in the second and once in the final
period, but the Goderich lads were unable '
to reply.
The legionnaires' next game is here
Saturday at 8 p.m. against Strathroy.
