It appears that complica-
tion rates for the teens are
much higher than for the
older mothers. He also
suspects that among the
teenage group complications
are much more frequent in
the young unmarried women
than in their, married
counterparts.
"We believe that the com-
plications we see among
teenaged pregnancies are
not the result of
• physiological problems, but
are problems arising from
their emotional,
psychological and social con-
dition."
High stress and anxiety
levels can lead to medical
problems, but emotional and
prenatal and postnatal care.
Two personal interviews
will also be conducted — one
as soon as possible after the
young women learn they are
pregnant, the other within
four to 10 weeks after
childbirth.
Health and Welfare
Canada has provided $90,000
for the study to be conducted
by Prof. Grindstaff, Dr. Rs
Jay Turner, Director of the
UWO Health Care Research
Unit, and family physicians
Dr. John Sherin and Dr.
Joseph Morrissy.
The women will be ques-
tioned on education, number
of close friends, employ-
ment, economic status, rela-
tionship with parents, recent
major events such as death
of a parent or job loss and at-
titudes toward child rearing.

resulting from teen pregnan-
cies.
The number of teenage
girls who become pregnant
each year — four or five out
of every 100 — makes the pro-
blem a serious concern for
social agencies and govern-
ment, he says.
The study will also at-
tempt to determine if
pregnancy complications
are related to the woman's
feelings of self-esteem and
whether she thinks she has
control over the direction
her life is taking.
If the research proves that
social support is the key to
greater health among
teenaged mothers, then pro-
grams could be designed to
provide them with emotional
support and counselling.
