Goderich woman speaks at celebration
By Helen Owen
The ladies of Bayfield's
Trinity Anglican Church
Women and their guests
celebrated St. Andrew's Day
on ,November 30th. Follow-
ing the usual custom the first
part of the proceedings was
the celebration of Commu-
nion at which the Rev. Gor-
don Reynolds officiated.
The guest speakers for the
occasion were Mrs. June
Taylor of Goderich and Mrs.
Jo Daunt of Listowel. These
ladies are involved in the
Diocesan ACW project "Ven-
ture into Parishes', and both
are well known 'for their
unremitting work m this con-
nection. Mrs. Taylor
represents the Deanery of
South Saugeen,. and Mrs.
Daunt is first vice President
of the Diocesan ACW Coun-
cil.
The Trinity ladies provid
ed a pot luck luncheon which
was attended by members of
the Guild, Chancel Guild,
representatives from St.
James, Middleton, Mr.
Reynolds and Rev. George
Youmatoff. It was unfor-
tunate that both Rev.
Douglas Pitts and Rev.
William Bennett were uan-
ble to be present as both
were in hospital.
President, Lilian
Beakhust, welcomed the
guests and thanked the
speakers for bringing their
presentation to Bayfield.
Mrs. Daunt said that the
films being shown were the
result of exhaustive
research into the history of
the Women's Auxiliary, now
the, Anglican Church Women
(ACW), and had been pro-
duced for the National
Women's Conference held in
Winnipeg last May.
The series of slides which
followed traced. the
background and develop-
ment of today's ACW over
the past 100 years. The ac-
companying commentary

paid tribute to the women
Who had set out to provide
practical and realistic aid
and assistance in the work of
the Anglican church, locaUy
and m the mission field, Wat-
ching the pictures of the in-
itiators, learning of their
aims, and the ways in which
they worked to implement
them, was a lesson in itself.
These women had to over-
come prejudices and
discouragement. Never-
theless, the photographs of
these remarkable ladies -
corsetted, bonneted and but-
ton booted - brought to life
their determination and
perseverance. Time dimmed
the pictures but not the
courage and dedication
which they brought to their
tasks. Challenges were met:
polite but veiled disapproval
was handled with tact and
diplomacy.
Reaching out to those
areas where they understood
the needs to be the greatest,
they supported schools,
training schemes and mis-
sionary work. They also par-
ticipated, often under dif-
ficult conditions. One exam-
ple concerned two ladies who
carried out their work driv-
ing an unwieldly truck. One
day this overturned on a par-
ticularly rutted road.
Although injured herself, the
one who was able to crawl
out went to get help for her
companion. Trapped and
helpless this poor woman
suffered burns from the acid
escaping from the battery!
Whatever the call;. wherever
the work to be undertakeriA a
succession of wom 4i
responded. Even more im-
portant; they pursued their
objectives in relation to the
times in which they lived.
Over the years, from the
small beginnings, the ex-
perience of these pioneers
have changed, and the need
which they seek to meet
have altered with fluctuation
in values in today's society.
From lay workers and
volunteers, whose training
evolved from practical ex-
perience, today's women in
the Anglican Church have
expanded their roles. The or-
dination of women, although
opposed in some areas, has
now been achieved.
Thanking the speakers for
their presentation, the
secretary of the group said
they were most grateful for
the opportunity they had
been given to review the
history of these courageous
and forward-looking church
women.

Maintain
equipment
It pays to maintain your
farm equipment in the
winter. Why? Replacement
parts for farm machinery
can be hard to get. Suppliers
of farm machinery often
have a huge backlog of parts
ordered' that haven't been
delivered. During the winter
slow down, it is a good idea
to cheek all your farm equip-
ment for wear. If you need a
replacement part, order it
now.
A careful check of your
equipment now, will help you
avoid many frustrations that
happen with breakdowniIn
