Party
held for
war vets
BY NEW SHAW
Forty-seven war veterans
'from Westminster (Park-
wood)
Parkwood) Hospital enjoyed a
very special Christmas
party at Goderich Legion
Branch 109 on Thursday,
November 24.
'f•e =!tom
Auxiliary of Legion Branch
109.
The Westminster veterans
arrived at the Legion hall by
mid-afternoon, at which
time, they enjoyed the warm
hospitality of the Auxiliary
who were assisted.* zeverar
members of the Branch.
Later in the afternoon, a
roast beef dinner,, catered by
the Auxiliary, was served to
the veterans and following
supper, Mr. S. Claus was on
hand to greet and distribute
a gift to each veteran
present.
The veterans, under the.
direction of Bill Powell,
recreation director at
Westminster, returned to
London accompanied by two
bushels of locally grown
apples donated for this oc-
casion.
Special local veterans at
the Christmas party were
former army nursing sister,
Margaret Mitchell and
Comrade Orah Crawford.
This special partywas
convened by comrade
Annette Stemp of the Branch
109 Ladies' Auxiliary and

costs on the government's
$650 million investment in
the oil company have ex-
ceeded $69 million, while .
-revenues have totalled about
$16 million. Opposition
research calculations' show
that the net loss through the
first three-quarters of 1982
totals $52,963,127 - money
that could have been used to
create approximately 2,100
full-time jobs in Ontario.
RE -MOR
The°Minister of Consumer
and Commercial Relations,
Dr. Robert Elgie, has stated
that he agrees with the main
thrust of a report by the On-
tario Ombudsman which
recommends provincial
compensation for investors
who lost money when Re-
Mor Investment Manage-
ment Corp, went bankrupt
two years ago: He hopes that
the matter can be resolved
within a few months. Some
kind of compensation plan is
under review by his Ministry
and the Attorney -General's
Ministry.
One of the 'difficulties is
that half the 320 investors
chose to appeal to the Om-
budsman for a decision,
while the other half went to
court.
Proverbs Case
According to the Attorney -
General, Roy McMurty, the
Crown decided to proceed
with its case against Neil
Cameron Proverbs to show
that it would not be in-
timidated by pressure, and
because the weapons charge
against the man was valid.
The A.G. informed the
Legislature that the govern-
ment felt it was in the in-
terest of the administration
of justice to proceed. Pro -
'verbs was found guilty of
possession of a weapon
dangerous to the public, in
fact a. loaded 12 gauge
shotgun. However, he plans
toMbert Roy (Lib. Ottawa
East) had asked why the
Crown had proceeded with
the case in spite of evidence
that the Metro Police Office
who had arrested Proverbs
in 1980 had "doctored his
evidence" at the
preliminary hearing. The At-
torney General conceded.
that the officer's credibility
as a Crown witness was very
much an issue at the trial,
and that "a great deal of.
pressure" was brought to
bear on his office to drop the
charges -following the-r-evela- -
tion that Proverbs had
secretly videotaped conver-
sations with two police of-
ficersi.- _
Education
TheM i"ster of Ed
u_catr__-
Dr. Bette Stephenson, has
stated that, as of September
1983,' Obt ib Students.. will
be required to write at least
one examination in each sub-
ject area, such exams to be
given at any time during the
school year, and to be used to
evaluate whether a student
is able to communicate what
has been learned. However,
she emphasized she was not
reintroducing standard
province -wide exams, which
were abolished in 1967.
