'palliation' comes from the
term 'palliate', which means
to "alleviate (disease)

Dying is a part of living
and a natural conclusion.
Throughout the course of
history, people have lived
and died and families have
grieved. Why then is there a
this nature? A generation
ago every family was
familiar with death within
the close-knit structure of
the extended family and the
community. The size of the
family was larger and health
care was limited. It was
traditional for aging grand-
parents to have their
bedroom adjacent to the kit-
chen, which was not only
convenient, but also kept
them within the family cir-
cle. They lived and died at

The major problem of the
dying is the attitude of socie-
ty in failing to understand
their needs. One of the pro-
blems that the dying are fac-
ed with is fear of pain. There
was not time to balance the
medication as they were ad-

following day. Pain can

Shifting the burden
Dear Editor,
The Cabinet met to ponder many weighty
things,
How to trim their services, yet not give up
the strings,
How can we manage this - Then up spoke
Mr. Drea,
"If you will but listen, COMSOC has found
a way".
"We can close facilities in Smalltown On-
tario,
And promise help in funding homes where
M.R. folk can go.
We should close the old ones, but would
lose too many votes,
So these six smaller ones, must surely be
the goats."
"Of course we'll give a free hand to local
mayors and such,
So they'll assume the care of those who
need a crutch.
When handicapped are moved out, we can
then cut back,
We'll say the 'six and five' apply - the
Town takes up the slack."
"We know what will happen, taxes will
surely rise,
But they will be the local ones, so blame
falls on local guys."
And all that gathered Cabinet agreed with
Mr. Drea,
That they could shift the burden, and still

stated that it was being
answerable to God for one's

talking about commitment.
The first question is: am I
really committed to Jesus
Christ?. Then the question of
stewardship is easier to

Belgrave, reported that
several situations in the
Presbytery have prompted
the executive to look at ways
to give congregations more
confidence. •
One suggestion coming
from the report was to en-
courage ongoing training of
all ministers, especially lay
supply and supervising
pastors.
Rev. Roberts also stressed
the concern that Presbytery
has not been allowed to
carry out its mandate on
some occasions. Decisions
that affect Presbytery
responsibilities are reported
to the court after they have
been made. "Please," he
stressed, "work out your
church affairs with

to look at."
General Council Report
One of the highlights of
reports by delegates to
General Council in Montreal
was that of Kathy Under-
wood on the Youth Forum.
The Winghain youth was
elected secretary of the 90 -
delegate group. She in-
dicated that she had an-
ticipated a common ap-
proach to subjects under
discussion but was surprised
at the divergence of opinion
of the young adults.
Rev. Maurice Francis of
Thamesview, reported that
he got the impression from
his contacts that perhaps a
mistake had been made to
legalize French -only signs
and French -only language.
An adchtional per member
assessment of 30 cents for
1983 was approved in the
budget presented by Charles
Gates, Stratford. The 1981

Studies indicate that 70
percent of Canadians die in
institutions and frequently
their needs are overlooked
once all medical avenues
have 'been tried. To over-
come this, there has been an
emergence of palliative care

Canada. Recently, the

experts in the field of
palliative care from the

There are six principles of
Palliative Care: 1. to treat
the patient as a person, 2. to
avoid inappropriate treat-

trol (which requires clearly -
defined medical leadership),
4. care of the relatives, 5.
