GDCI Vikings win Huron -Perth
junior basketball championship
BY TD
The GDCI Vikings won the Huron -Perth
Conference junior girls' basketball
championship, sweeping the best -of -three
final series with Seaforth in" two straight
games last week.
The Vikings won the series opener 69-44
in Seaforth Tuesday and took the cham-
pionship with a convincing 81-31 win before
an enthusiastic crowd in their own gym
Thursday.
The championship capped a perfect
season for coach Phil Bugler's team. The
Vikings won all ten of their regular season
games and took the championship in the
minimum of three games in playoff action
to record a perfect 13-0 won -lost record in
Huron -Perth Conference play. The Vikings
scored an average of 62 points per game
while giving up an average of only 21, for
an incredible winning margin of 41 points
per game. The Vikings have an overall
record of 24 wins and six losses. Of those
losses, one was by one point, two were by,
two points and one other was in overtime.
The Vikings advance now to the WOSSA
"AA" finals which will be played in Sar-
nia, December 4 and 5.
The first game of the final series with
Seaforth was tight, playoff basketball for
one quarter. The Vikings led 18-14 after the
first quarter, but the Vikings' ace scorer,
captain Kim Fritzley, asserted herself in
the second quarter, scoring 12 points on six
long, outside shots over the Seaforth zone
defence. From that point on, the Vikings
controlled the game, leading 38-45 at the
half en route to their 25 point winning
margin.
Fritzley finished the game with a total of
30 points. Christine Stapleton, who led the
Vikings in rebounding, scored 20 points.
Tammy Gibbons had 11 points and did an
outstanding defensive job in the second
half, holding Seaforth's top scorer Denise
Morey to only three points. Morey had 14 in
the first half before Gibbons was given the
assignment of covering her. Cathy Gallow,
with six points and Mary Murphy, with
two, rounded out the Viking attack.
In addition to Morey's 17 points, Seaforth
got double figure efforts from Lucille
Delaney, with 12, and Brenda Wesenberg,
with 10.
The outcome of game two was never in
doubt as the Vikings were clearly too
powerful for the willing but outgunned
Seaforth team.
Kim Fritzley personally outscored the .
whole Seaforth team, getting 37 points.
Fritzley had a total of 92 points in the three
playoff games the Vikings played.
Christine Stapleton turned in another
strong effort, hooping 23 points. Tammy
Gibbons had 15 points. Mary Murphy had
three and played an outstanding defensive
game. Cathy Gallow, who led the team in
assists, and Melaine Jeffrey each had two
points.
The Vikings led 19-6 after one quarter,
47-14 at the half and 67-25 after three
quarters.
Denise Morey again topped the Seaforth
offence with 16 points and Lucille Delaney
had six.
