The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-11-24, Page 19Goderi.ch'_ SIGNAL STAR PIEC NATIO 134 YEAR -47 GODERICH, ONTARIO, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1982 SECOND SECPION GDCI Vikings win Huron -Perth junior basketball championship BY TD The GDCI Vikings won the Huron -Perth Conference junior girls' basketball championship, sweeping the best -of -three final series with Seaforth in" two straight games last week. The Vikings won the series opener 69-44 in Seaforth Tuesday and took the cham- pionship with a convincing 81-31 win before an enthusiastic crowd in their own gym Thursday. The championship capped a perfect season for coach Phil Bugler's team. The Vikings won all ten of their regular season games and took the championship in the minimum of three games in playoff action to record a perfect 13-0 won -lost record in Huron -Perth Conference play. The Vikings scored an average of 62 points per game while giving up an average of only 21, for an incredible winning margin of 41 points per game. The Vikings have an overall record of 24 wins and six losses. Of those losses, one was by one point, two were by, two points and one other was in overtime. The Vikings advance now to the WOSSA "AA" finals which will be played in Sar- nia, December 4 and 5. The first game of the final series with Seaforth was tight, playoff basketball for one quarter. The Vikings led 18-14 after the first quarter, but the Vikings' ace scorer, captain Kim Fritzley, asserted herself in the second quarter, scoring 12 points on six long, outside shots over the Seaforth zone defence. From that point on, the Vikings controlled the game, leading 38-45 at the half en route to their 25 point winning margin. Fritzley finished the game with a total of 30 points. Christine Stapleton, who led the Vikings in rebounding, scored 20 points. Tammy Gibbons had 11 points and did an outstanding defensive job in the second half, holding Seaforth's top scorer Denise Morey to only three points. Morey had 14 in the first half before Gibbons was given the assignment of covering her. Cathy Gallow, with six points and Mary Murphy, with two, rounded out the Viking attack. In addition to Morey's 17 points, Seaforth got double figure efforts from Lucille Delaney, with 12, and Brenda Wesenberg, with 10. The outcome of game two was never in doubt as the Vikings were clearly too powerful for the willing but outgunned Seaforth team. Kim Fritzley personally outscored the . whole Seaforth team, getting 37 points. Fritzley had a total of 92 points in the three playoff games the Vikings played. Christine Stapleton turned in another strong effort, hooping 23 points. Tammy Gibbons had 15 points. Mary Murphy had three and played an outstanding defensive game. Cathy Gallow, who led the team in assists, and Melaine Jeffrey each had two points. The Vikings led 19-6 after one quarter, 47-14 at the half and 67-25 after three quarters. Denise Morey again topped the Seaforth offence with 16 points and Lucille Delaney had six. Viking coach Phil Bugler provided the following "player profiles" of his Huron - Perth championship team members: Kim Fritzley: the team captain and floor. leader, pound for pound the most dedicated and determined. athlete Bugler feels he has coached. She handled pressure situations with class, averaging 25 points a game and amassing a total of 753 points over the season. Christine Stapleton: carne on strong in the latter part of the season becoming an integral part of the Vikings' success with her rebounding. She scored 52 points in the Vikings' three playoff games. Mary Murphy: a fine defensive player and strong rebounder whose contribution was vital to the Vikings' team play. Tammy Gibbons: the point guard whose hustle and fine passing contributed greatly to the Viking team effort. Cathy Gallow: a "rookie" whose great floor sense and fine shooting and coolness under pressure made her a starter and a key part of the Vikings' success. Melaine Jeffrey: a steady performer who could be counted on coming off the bench in tough situations. Kathleen Donnelly: dedicated to the game and the team, showed steady im- provement. Shelley Teal: a returning junior who should play regularly next year, showed steady improvement late in the season. (photo by Dave Sykes) Local Novice team defeats Exeter 6-3 The Goderich Garb and Gear Novice team defeated the Exeter Novices in Goderich on Saturday 6-3. Goderich had jumped to a 3-0 lead by the end of the seconWperiod with all tar e goals being scored by Chad Papple for a hat -trick. He was assisted on his first goal by Drew Macaulay and Todd Papple; and 6n his second by 5ason Hayter. His third goal .:gas unassisted: Exeter finally got on the scoreboard in the third period with two quick goals but Goderich came back with three more. These were scored by Jason Volland assisted by Jared Whalen; Whalen assisted by Jason Jeffrey and Todd Papple; and Ian Bowman assised by Macaulay. Exeter then scored one last goal. The local Novice team received good steady goaltending by Jason Duckworth and Chuck MacClennan who stopped several break -always. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Atoms advance to first place in League The Goderich Machinist Atoms ad- vanced to first place in the Atoms division of the Shamrock Hockey League this weekend with two convincing wins. Friday night they defeated Ilderton 13-1 in Ilderton. On Saturday in Goderich they defeated their rival St. Marys team 8-4. The Ilderton Atoms were no match for Goderich even though the locals didn't play one of their better games of the season against them. Hat -tricks were recorded by Richard Bowman and Tim Harrison with Jason J"i"-at'son chipping in two. Single goals were scored by Shawn Talbot, Justin Fagan, Brian Lane, Andre Cauchi and Jeff Hodges. Assists went to Hodges with four, 'Chirs Erb with three and Ryan Fagan, I ichardPBowman, Lonnie Ruruig, Aaron Duckworth and Andre Cauchi with one each.« On Saturday, the local Atoms played high calibre hockey against the tough St. Marys team. St. Marys scored the first goal of the game but Goderich came back with two; the first an unassisted goal by Andre Cauchi and the second by- Brian Lane assisted by Tim Harrison. St. Marys then went ahead again with two quick goals but Andre Cauchi scored another unassisted goal to tie the score. St. Marys then pulled ahead again for the last time before Goderich came on strong with five goals, four of them scored in the third period. These were' tallied by Andre Cauchi (for a hat -trick) \assisted by Shawn Talbot; Harrison unassisted; Harrison assisted by Cauchi and Richard Bowman; Jeff Hodges assisted by Talbot and Andre Cauchi and Harrison (for a hat -trick) assisted by Lane: The last goal was scored into an empty net after St. Marys pulled their goalie with over three minutes left in the game. Pat Donnelly and Jean-Paul Cauchi shared goal -tending duties for Goderich in both weekend games. The local Atoms will play Exeter in Goderich this Saturday at 4 p.m. Midgets iosecios e game BY TD The Goderich Legion Branch 109 Midgets lost a close 5-4 game in Shamrock Hockey League action here Saturday night. The visiting Parkhill Midgets jumped off to a 3-0 lead before the Legionnaires got untracked. The Goderich team caught fire in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 dead into the third period, but Parkhill came back with two goals earlyin the third period and held on for the win. Trevor Erb scored three of the Legionnaires' goals and Grant Garrow got the other. Pete Willems had two assists. and Garrow and Rob Gibbons had one each. The game was a penalty -filled affair, with Parkhill taking a total of 44 minutes in minor penalties and the home team taking 38 minutes. The Legionnaires lost an exhibition game Friday night in §arni"a, 8-4, to the Sarnia 'AAA' midgets. Despite the :loss, the Goderich team played well against the higher calibre Sarnia team. Doug Smith had two of the Goderich goals. Daryl Madge, in his first game since returning from the Clinton Mustangs, had a goal and an assist. Jeff McEwin got the other Goderich goal. The Legionnaires have no league games scheduled this week, but will be playing an exhibition game here Saturday at 8 p.m.
