Wage Controls
Ontario's top union leaders
have been told by the
Premier that he will not
yield to their demands and
withdraw theg overnment's
public sector wage controls.
He stated he would not
consider introducing a
surtax on therr'
ch
and the
creation of a provincial
unemployment insurance
scheme for workers whose
federal benefits had expired.
Unions had included both
.proposals in a brief to the •
Premier. He
said he

verge of loss their benefits,
and recognized the need to

and would consider
some of the proposals which
labour leaders had presented
to him to assist an economic
recovery.
"We'r`e looking at the
whole brief," he said. Union
leaders, however. were
discouraged by. the
Premier's refusal to give
them a commitment to adopt
any of their suggestions - and
also his outright rejection of
their call for wage controls
to be abandoned.
