The campaign has two aspects. The first involves seminars in 30 communities throughout the province to demonstrate how small and medium sized manufac- turers can increase their sales and profits by expor- ting. Each seminar involves trade experts and business consultants discussing such matters as developing an ex- port marketing plan, financ- ing, market research and analysis, federal and provin- cial assistance programs. In addition to the seminars, a second aspect of ,the trade push, involves .ex- port forums in five,., key regional centres. More than 800 hand-picked firms will participate in these exports forums scheduled to take place in London, Windsor, Kingston, Hamilton and North Bay. Senior representatives from the foreign offices of the Ministryof Industry Trade have been called home to provide manufac- turers with current data on sales leads in their marketing areas. In this respect, the foreign representatives and the directors of the Ministry's 18 regional offices throughout the province will provide On- tario industries with an ex- traordinary network of infor- mation and advice. Manufacturers attending the forums will be able to sit down with the Ministry ex- perts on "one to one" con- sultations onsuch matters as product distribution, joint ventures, licensing ar- rangements and overseas in- vestment opportunities. The Minister said in the House that it is their goal to double exports to 860 billion by 1987. Food sales tax to stay Provincial Treasurer Frank Miller has ruled out any changes until next year's budget, although new figures show his seven per cent sales tax is hurting On- tario restaurants. Statistics Show that take out sales fell 17 per cent in July to $58 million, from $70 million a year ago. Housing grant deadline - won't be extended Ontario has no intention of matching a federal plan to extend home ownership grants to homebuyers who purchase new homes before April 30. The provincial stipulation is that people must agree to tuy by the end of the year, and Treasurer Frank Miller has been critical of the federal finance Minister's intention to ex- tend the deadline because there aren't, in any event, many housing starts between January and April in this province, which means builders would have to sell existing homes to benefit from the scheme. • Hydro employees In., res i t nse to a written question by Bob Nixon, it transpires that more than 1,500 Ontario Hydro employees will each earn $50,000 or more this year. Nixon also asked what Hydro pays its chairman but the answer tabled in the Legislature merely said that his salary is in the rangeofa Deputy Minister - $61,000 to $77,375. Incidentally, it has recently been announced that Hydro is boosting its bulk power rates for 1983 by an average 8.4 per cent. Health centres According to the Minister of Health, Larry Grossman, more Ontario doctors will be encouraged to set aside their fee-for-service business and join a community health cen- tre. While medicare has removed. financial barriers to medical service, it ap- pears that the poor are not making full use of -the health care system. There are at present 10 community health care centres and 17 health service organizations in the province and the Ministry of Health has given the health care : centre association a $150,01)0 grant to develop more centres and has pro- mised that there will be per- manent financing. Limousines During the debate on the estimates of the Manage- ment Board Chairman George McCague, Bob Nixon pointed out that taxpayers pay $1 million a year to pro- vide the 29 ministers of the Ontario Cabinet <with chauffeur -driven limousines, when many of them have no official need for such cars. He stated he did not object to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Den- nis Timbrell, being provided with a .car to visit the rural community, but felt that Ministers' salaries were suf- ficient to buy cars to drive between office and home.
