LOOKING BACK ,75 YEARS AGO When Robert McLean starts out to do things, he generally makes a complete job of it and that's what one would say of the changes being wrought in several sections 'of his business block between East and Kingston Streets. Beginning on the north end, he has tran- sformed the store so long occupied by Videan and Company, putting in a plate glass front and cement floor and fitting the premises for a new McLean's meat market. In the Kingston Street' end the Imperial Cafe premises have been enlarged and improved. And Yule's bicycle and electric fixtures shop is to have a modern plate glass front in keeping with the rest of the block. The vacant lots fronting on St. David's Street have been levelled off, surrounded by a high fence and fitted -up with all necessary buildings for an open air Skating rink. In bags of small lots, coal costs in Goderich $9 a ton. Some people in Goderich are talking of using con- densed milk and cream since prices are soaring so high. 40 YEARS AGO The overseas parcels committee last week packed 25 parcels for Goderich men in the services and, in ad- dition, arranged with a large Toronto -firm who are familiar with the regulations governing such matters, to send parcels to the Goderich boysat present in German prison camps. There was some concern here regarding the steamer Syperior which left here at 1 o'clock Friday morning for the river after discharging a cargo of grain. The worst storm of the season broke a few hours after she left and raged all day. However, the Superior fought her way through safely. Miss Mary Ahl of Goderich has won a Carter scholarship for $100. The award is based on the highest ten papers in the county's upper schools. 25 YEARS AGO The Goderich Organ Company factory, idle since 1955, has been sold to Scotsmith Furniture Limited of London, who will com- mence moving in.shortly and expects to be in production by mid-February., The company specializes in The production of high grade church furniture. Engine trouble forced an airplane to land at Sky Harbor Airport about 1:30 p.m. Monday which con- tained three men, two of whom have been named in criminal conspiracy charges in connection with an in- ternational car smuggling ring. The men were sub- sequently arrested, bringing to seven the total rounded up by RCMP so far. The Department of Transport will be asked to declare the buildings at Sky Harbor Airport surplus so Huron County Council will be able to negotiate for their purchase. 5YEARS AGO Jubilant members of the Goderich• senior, Vikings football team were escorted • around town in the fire truck Saturday following their 18-0 victory over Exeter Pan- thers to win the Huron -Perth senior football cham- pionship. The win capped a perfect season. For the first time since 1969, the contract for gar- bage collection .in Goderich has been tendered and a new contractor, Don Carter of Wingham, has been hired as of January 1, 1978, The Carter bid was the lowest of five received. The Huron County secondary school teachers and the county board of education. agreed recently to, app if'.s mediator- -to- at-. - tempt to. settle the 1977-78 teacher board collective agreement. In a close recorded vote -5 -to- 4-Goderich town council has agreed to co-operate with Goderich Township and Colborne Township to raise $25,000 on a per capita basis to subsidize the cost of a parcel of land at the corner of West and Waterloo Streets to facilitate the construction of a senior citizens' housing complex.
