Dear Editor,
I am one of the pupils at-
tending a public school in
Goderich who collected for
UNICEF on October 31. As I
went from door to door with
a couple of friends, some
people were very ignorant.

would like to donate they
replied with, "I don't have
any money," "I already
gave," or "I'm not giving
anything to some crummy

pennies. If they already
donated, I'm sure they could
give again and again.
UNICEF is definitely not a
crummy organization. It
sends money to needy
children all over the world.
Pwple just don't realize
what their tiny donations can
do. For example one nickel
will give 25 children a glass
of milk, six cents will pur-
chase medicine to cure infec-
tions and $5 will stock a pond
full of fish for a whole
village. With all these suffer-
ing children, I'm surprised
people don't even donate
more. UNICEF really .needs
your donations, Goderich, so
next Hallowe'en don't be
afraid to give a few cents.
Jenny Cunningham.
Concerned about people's mortgages
Dear Editor,
Recently our class, grade
6, Mr. Bond discussed
government, taxes,
unemployment, inflation and
the effects of these .upon the
poor in Canada and the third
world.
I am concerned that many
people are losing their jobs
and cannot meet their mor-
tgage so` they are forced to
lose their homes. On top of
this, inflation continues to
rise adding to the problems
of unemployment.
In the third world, people
are starving and dying
because of lack of food and
water and yet .government
taxes throughout the world
spend in their military
budgets the total of
UNICEF's annual budget in
four hours.
My point is that if we spent
less money manufacturing
weapons to kill and hurt peo-
ple, maybe we could use that
money to improve the quali-
ty of their lives.
Yours faithfully,
Emma Hollingworth
My family and I are really "well off"
Dear Editor,
One day in school last
week, we were tacking about
poverty. I got thinking that
my family and I are really
"well off" compared to some
of the people in North
America, India and Africa.
We have a backyard where
we can play games and have
a garden. Some children
have to play in the streets.
Three good meals a day
and sometimes a snack or
two. Very different to
children who barely have
one meal a day.
A heated house with elec-
tricity and running water. So
we don't have to worry about

Why don't we charge less
Dear Editor,
Our class was talking
about UNICEF and how
Mexico is having so much
trouble. We asked our
teacher a lot of questions
that he couldn't answer and
told us to write to you.
One of the questions I
would like to be answered is
why little kids can collect
UNICEF on hallowe'en but
all the countries that have a
lot of money don't give very
much?
Another question I was
wondering about is why
don't we charge less interest
on the money we gave Mex-
ico? We are close neighbours
with Meruco and we should
always help our neighbours!
My last question is why
don't we send people to teach
Mexicans how to farm and to
teach their children?
I hope you can answer my
questions.
Robbie. Dempsey,
Robertson School.
Should chip in
Dear Editor,
Have you ever thought of
the poorer countries like
Mexico or - Africa where
some of the people in them
can only afford one or maybe
two meals a day and others,
not even that? UNICEF does
help, but not enough. Why
isn't there more?
If the richer countries
chipped in on some extra

Stop making killing machines
Dear Editor,
On Hallowe'en I collected
for UNICEF. Friday,
November 5 we were talking
about poverty in Mexico.
While we were talking I read
on a UNICEF bookmark that
"the world's military spends
UNICEF's annual budget
every four hours" and I
thought if they stopped mak-
ing their killing machines,
the immense amount of
money could be used for sav-
ing children. Why don't
they?
Andrew Scott, 11.
Robertson Public School.
Why isn't it -accepted?
Dear Editor,
I am in grade six and I go
to school, in Goderich. Our
class was . talkieg, about
poverty and UNICEF in our
world. UNICEF is United

all over Canada, I collected
\for UNICEF. Did you know
that the armed forces uses
UNICEF's annual fund in on-
ly four hours? '
Why don't some countries
accept UNICEF's fund? Are
. they too proud? Why do they
let their people die?
Some people don't know
what their donations can do.
So please donate to UNICEF
today, please.

Tax money so high no food
Dear Editor,
During a class discussion
on Mexican poverty and
their debt, we went on to
-world poverty and even -
though Canada has high
unemployment, we could br-
ing a truck full of bulbs and
seeds to Hungary or Mexico.
My point is the money we
spend on taxes is so high, we
have nothing left for food.
So while the people are
starving, the government is
spending money like there
was no tomorrow and still
getting more.
Sincerely,
Sandra Chambers,
