Retired minister dies at 100
THE REVEREND
J. URE STEWART
Seaforth's oldest resident
and a former Goderich
resident, the Reverend J.
Ure Stewart, died Monday,
November 8 in Seaforth
Community Hospital. He
was in hia101st year.
In April, Mr. Stewart
celebrated the 75th an-
niversary of his ordination
as a minister and delivered
his first sermon, written
back in 1907, to a delighted
audience at Northside
United Church, Seaforth.
Mr. Stewart is survived by
his wife, the former Laura
Mole, to whom he was
married in- 1961; and by
three children, Mrs. Alvin
(Marjorie) Hammond of
Moorefield and Dr. K. G.
Stewart and Mrs. Lloyd
(Muriel) Christner, both of
Kitchener. Nine grand-
children and 11 great-
grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Stewart's first wife,
the former Catherine E.
McLean, whom he married
in 1908, died in 1954. A
brother, William and a
sister, Isabella also
predeceased him.
Born in Saltford to James
and Anna (Matheson)
Stewart on June 18, 1882, Mr.
Stewart graduated from
McGill University with a
B.A. in 1904 and from
McCormick. Theological
College inChicago. •
In a Signal -Star interview
earlier this year, Mr.
Stewart recalled • his first
post as a young student
minister in Montana. where
he visited tnembers of his
congregation over a 75
square mile area by hor-
seback. His first church was
in Fort Wayne, part of
Detroit, Michigan, where he
was ordained in 1907.
A Presbyterian minister
before church union in 1925,
when he joined the United
OBITUARIES
Church, he served
congregations in Napier,
Whitechurch, Longbranch,
Belmont, Rockwood,
Aberfoyle, Guelph, Elmira,
Moorefield, Bright and
Oxford Centre before he
retired officially in 1951:
Although retired, Mr.
Stewart , was a popular
minister at special services
in many parts of the
province. He had a keen wit
and sense of humor and was
the author of an
autobiography and of a
genealogy of his mother's
family, the Mathesons. An
accomplished photographer,
he and his wife Laura were
often asked to present slide
shows of their travels to local
groups.
Mr. Stewart met his wife
Laura when he answered her
ad in the United Church
Observer. She was a
minister's widow and ,was
offering her late husband's
gown for sale.
"I went for the gown and 1
got the girl," he joked to
members of Seaforth council
when the town honored him
on his 100th birthday in June
of this year:
The body of the late Mr.
Stewart rested at the
Whitney-Ribey Funeral
Home on Goderich Street,
West in Seaforth until
Thursday, . November 11
when a funeral service was
held at 2 p.m. in Northside
