Round
'n About
with Martha
Martha Rathburn
A couple of years ago we
set out from Sarasota to see
friends in Fort Meyers. It
was near the end of the
February and the weather
was bright and warm.
That end of the peninsula
of Florida is also very in-
teresting, especially Thomas
Edison's home, workshop
and grounds. You could
spend all day in the buildings
and never see everything.
They say -and I'm sure it is
true–that a day never passes
that you don't use something
invented by Edison.
The park where our
friends live is nice and the
grounds with its trees and
flowers really interested me.
In one part there was a
mahogany tree and there
were seed pods still on it. The
pod I found was over four
inches long. It opened length-
wise into six hard pieces.
Inside was a magnificent
work of nature and a work of •
art, in the way of seeds.
Each were on a feather -like,
wing to be carried by the
wind or birds when the pod
opened. I don't know when I
have ever seen anything
quite like it.
The outer shell pieces were
mahogany red and I'm sure
you'd have great trouble •
trying to cut a piece with a
saw.
Besides that tree and some
others that were not
familiar, were flowers I
could not describe. Fan-
tastic!.
When Edison was alive, he
had a.wharf nearby where
ships from India and other
places could tie up. So that
was how he received trees
and other growth from all
over the world and it is all to
be seen ' on his grounds.
Needless to say, it is very
beautiful and, unusual.
• There is .a small island,
elongated, perhaps it is
actually what they call a key
or a cay, built up by 'the
waves on . the edge of the
peninsula and conch shells,
very • beautiful ones, are
found there. These shells are
also found further south near
Naples.
Ocie day, some years ago;
at about eight in the mor- .
ning, .I was wandering along
the Shore at Venice, 40 miles
north of.Fort Meyers. At
Venice Beach are to be found
sharks' teeth, most of which
are small but some very
large, larger than the palm
of my hand!
People from Naples and
Fort Meyers, go to Venice for
these unusual teeth and from
Venice they go north along
the Gulf: They have to get
the large shells south of
Venice at Naples or Fort
Meyers.
Confused? Well, the
sharks' teeth are not found at
any other spot along the
coast except at Venice. No
one knows why, but that was
what I heard and I also read
about it somewhere.
Anyway, this one morning,
I was watching people on
their knees with their hands
flying back' and forth trying
to capture the very tiny shell
fish or muscles called
Cochinas.
For awhile I tried to he1F
them but . the tiny devils,
whieh are washed in by the
waves, start digging into the
sand the instan,they feel it.
They are really funny tc
watch and they're so fast. I
would stop here and there,
talking to others or helping
than'of tit watching far the
sharks' teeth.
A lady came along whe
had a large flat triangular
sharks tooth covering her
hand. She was practically
crying. I remarked about the
size_ and she _. sobbed,. .".Look .,._,.
at it. Look 'at it.`
Well, it was the biggest I
had ever seen but then she
said, "Look at the chip!"
Well, there was a small chip
off the point and I suppose
that would cut down the
value of it since they are
worth a lot money! I can't
believe the chip cut that
much off the value though!
I loved walking along the
Venice beaches. I awakened
