The Clinton Mustangs
under new coach Jim Nigro
picked up a pair of im-
pressive victories in Junior
"C" action last weekend as
they trounced Port Elgin
Bears 11.5-. on Friday night
and the Hanover Barons 5-3
on Sunday afternoon.
The same familiar faces
with a lot more hustle and
desire moved the Mustangs
into contention with the rest
of the league and only
Kincardine Kinucks are
running away at the top of
the league.
The teams were tied at two

locals opened up a 6-3 lead
after two periods of play as
Mark Soppie, Mark Rowe,
Tony Gibbings and Grant
Pryde notched singles for the
Stangs.,
Port Elgin bouncedback,
early in the third period with
a power play goal and. a
penalty shot goal to narrow
the margin to one goal before
,- the Stangs retaliated with
five unanswered goals late in
• the period to finish off the
Bears. '
Scoring for Clinton in the
third period were Brian
Horner with two, Grant
Pryde, Brad Armstrong, and
Brad •Hym'ers. Jeff
Denomme had 17 saves in
the nets for Clinton. '
On Sunday ' afternoon the
Mustangs travelled to
Hanover to face the second
place Hanover Barons and
narrowly escaped with a
victory as the Barons
goaltender stopped 51 shots
in the 5-3 Mustang victory.
Former Mustang sharp-
shooter Greg Flowers,
scored the opening goal of
the game and Ken Thornton
put the Stangs ahead by two
but the Barons fought back
and tied the. game at two `
before the period ended.
The teams traded goals in
the second period and
remained -deadlocked at
three as the period ended to.
set the stage for an exciting
third period. Steve
Kowalchuk scored, the only
goal for the Stangs in the
second period.
The Stangs' Darryl Madge
scored the eventual ' winner,
on a new line combination
with Randy Graham .and.
Larry Boyce who were
playing their first game for
the season. , Brian Horner
scored an insurance goal m
thelast two minutes of play
to put the game out of reach
for . the Barons. Jim
MacDonald came up with a
fine effort as he . stopped 22
Hanover shots for the vic-
tory.
Next weekend the
Mustangs will take on the top
two teams in the league as
the Hanover Barons are m
town Friday night at 8:30
p.m. and then on Sunday the
Stangs travel to Kincardine
to face the Kinucks at 4 d.m.
The last time the Mustangs
faced the Kinucks they were
handed a 9-1 defeat and the
new look 'Mustangs are
determined to change things
around this weekend as they
prepare to challenge for the
top spot in the Central Junior
'C' league. •
