Round 'n About
Martha Rathburn
I'm still thinking about
travelling - someplace. Did
you ever enjoy one place so
much /hat you really wanted
to go back although it was
quitea few years later?
Don't.
One year we decided to go
to Montreal and Quebec and
• on farther. I recall being in
Quebec -Lower Town, I
believe, -anyway as we drove
through, the people were
opening front doors and step-
ping out in front of us. That
was a narrow road -it didn't
take us long to get out of
there.
Next we were on a higher
level and I wanted to see the
old and "new" city. There
were college studentswho
would drive your car and
take you to all the interesting
Spots, but "No, no-one is
ing. my car".. That was Mr. ,
R. He's impossible on a trip.
When you are going
somewhere that's where
you're going -and no , side
trips or . stop -overs -just
go,grAgo.
So we didn't see much of
Quebec City or Montreal
either, but by this time we
were on the west side of the
St: Lawrence and just follow. -
ed the road north. This hap-
pened so long ago I can't
recall the names of towns,
but we crossed at St. Simeon.
A 'small flat boat ferried us
to. Riviere du I ,oup to the
east side of the Jiver. From
there we travelled east pass-
ing St. Louis -du -Ha! Ha!
Don't ask me what all the ha
ha's were about but near
there we saw a beautiful
wayside 'altar with a large
cross and statue and so on.
We saw several of these on
our trips in Quebec, they
were all different but
beautiful Oh - on the
".haltia!" bit. They were
written as lia!Ha! with the
exclaination ,points -but . we
didn't findanything that fun-
ny.
Looking for a stop -over.
We were directed to Cabano
on -Lac Temiscouala". The
sun was setting, the cabins.
snowy •white, snuggled
• together in a row beside the
blue. blue lake. Honestly, it
was a beautiful sight. There
were no vacancies but the
taxi driver who happened to
be the owner took us to his
with Martha
home and we used his room.
The bedspread was odd -to
ME - it was woven of soft
white -. probably sheets - and
two widths were sewn
together. From there we
went to Saint John, N.B.
About six years later we
couldn't decide where we
wanted to go so I suggested
we go to a spot we had en-
joyed the most. Strangely we
all chose Cabano.
It was dark and gloomy
when we arrived and we
ldoked around for something
that had attracted us to the
spot - but nothing seemed the
same. So we stayed about
three days and travelled the
countryside -we even tried
fishing froip a bridge over a
small river. A policeman
came along and slowed
down -we thought he was go-
ing to talk to us but he went
on. Much later we found that
visitors MUST have a
licence, which cost con-
siderably, to fish in their
waters! We didn't catch
anything, anyway.
Oh, I recall we had stopped
at a place near the bridge to
see if we could get some
worms. We tried to explain
what we wanted but the
langtiage we couldn't speak.
About an' hour later they
brought us sorne fish which
they had -almost -thawed. At
least they had the general
idea.
huge rock. I have since made
a painting of the big rock and
I love it - then we went on to
St. John again. -A different
way home and we could set-
tle down again.
I enjoy travelling. There is
so much to see. Plan your
trips for midsummer in that
area.
Love
Martha

there was a mile long shopp-

unusual.
I recall staying overbite
