Moriarty, director of occupational therapy at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital defeated Steward 358 to 310 to fill the seat vacated by former trustee Vince Young of Goderich. It was the voters of the town of Clinton and township of Goderich that decided the race. Steward held a wide margin in Goderich receiving 262 votes com- pared to 188 for Moriarty and she maintained a 23-9_ margin in Colborne Town- ship. For Moriarty, the margin of victory came from voters in Clinton and Goderich Township. He received 109 votes in Clinton to Steward's 18.„and took 48 out of 55 ballots cast in Goderich Township. All four Bayfield votes went to Moriarty. A 'resident of Goderich Township for „the past 12 years, Moriarty serves on the advisory council of St. Josephs Church, Clinton and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He defeated J.D. Durnin who had completed 21 years as reeve. Aitchison has served eight years on council and this is the first time he has sought the reeveship. Atchison defeated Durnin 316-254. Gordon H. Brindley was acclaimed to deputy -reeve. In a race for council, Bruce Raynard topped the polls with 348 votes. Kathryn Todd polled 316 and Joseph Hickey received 284. Defeated were Bob Hallam with 271 and Karl Seeger with246. In Ashfield Township, incumbent councillor Allan Gibson is deputy -reeve. He defeated Cletus Dalton 421- 312. Councillors are Grant Farrish 561, Grant Curran 545 and William F. Andrew 493. Defeated was Elmer Draper with 345. Reeve John Austin was acclaimed. Gibson has 10 years previous experience on council and incumbent councillors are Farrish and Curran with eight years and four years experience respectively. For the position of trustee with the Huron County Board of Education to represent the townships of West Wawanosh and Ashfield, Tony McQuail of West Wawanosh succeeded top- ping the polls with 488. Defeated were Marybelle Cranston with 337 and Pat Haskell with 324. Ashfield held a referen- dum on the disarmament proposal. In favor of disarmament were 521 and 240 voted no. There was a 62 per cent voter turn out in Goderich for the election..( Photo by Joanne Buchanan) PUC poll Three incumbents return to commission Three incumbents retain- ed seats on the town's Public Utilities Commission and one new member was elected to the four -seat com- mission. Incumbents Herb Murphy, Dr. Jim Peters and Len Sheardown • were .decisive 'winners as five candidates battled for four seats on the commission. the new com- mission member is Dr. Tom Melady who defeated fifth place candidate Doug Bundy by 132 votes. Dr. Peters was the voter's choice for PUC with 2,351 votes followed by Shear - down, 2,245; Murphy, 2,018; Melady, 1,990 and Bundy, 1,858. President of District Six of the Ontario Municipal Elec- tric Association and chair- man of its public relations committee, Peters has serv- ed on the commission for six years and said the commis- sion must pursue the expan- sion of the town's water storage capabilities. Sheardown, a member of the Ontario Water Resources Association and commission member for 10 years, says the 'PUC and coup il. must work in. harmony tollpgrade the town's water distribution system. Murphy, ' principal of Huron Central Secondary School in Clinton, has served on the PUC for six years and also believes strongly that council. and the PUC must worked in a co-operative manner to improve an "inadequate water system.” The newest commission member, Dr. Tom Melady, believes that Ontario Hydro should pursue the propsect of alternate energy sources. A veterinarian, Dr, Melady has worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food for over 30 years and has lived in Goderich 26 years. Tom Melady Herb Murphy Len Sheardown Wallace retains board seat The chairman of the Huron County Board of Education, Dorothy Wallace, easily retained her seat on the board defeating incumbent, Jean Adams and Jim Kingsley. --The-t-hree--way_..rac.e-for_.the_ town's lone seat on the board of education was a runaway from the start and Wallace doubled the vote on her nearest rival. The final results showed Wallace with 1,465 votes, Adams 756 and Kingsley 694. Committee wants to establish home for battered wives here The Huron County Family Crisis Committee has asked town council for permission to establish a .county home for battered wives in Goderich. Group spokesman Ervine Stienman appeared before council claiming the Huron County Family Crisis Committee wanted recognition as a group and permission to locate the home at 101 West Street in floderich-.
