( Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Comedy op BY JOANNE BUCHANAN Goderich Little Theatre opened its 1982-83 season last Thursday evening with the two -act comedy 'Cactus Flower' directed by Anna Melski. In the lead role is Bill Metcalfe as Dr. Julian Winston, a playboy bachelor dentist who gets involved with a younger woman, Toni Simmons, played by Debbie Dunlop. Linda Longwell plays the dentist's devoted nurse, Stephanie Dickinson. Dr. Winston tells Toni that he is married with three children so .that she will not pressure him into marriage. However, after Toni tries to kill herself over the whole situation, the dentist decides he does want to marry her afterall. He says he will divorce his wife but Toni, who does not want to be considered a 'home - wrecker', insists 'on meeting the non-existant wife to make sure she is agreeable to the divorce first. In desperation, Dr. Win- ston bullies his nurse into playing the role of his wife. However, she plays the role a bit too well and the whole situation gets more and more comically confusing as the play wears on. Del Almeida as the virile young writer Igor St IBvatt meets Dr. Julian Winston played by Bill Metcalfe in the Goderich Little Theatre protiuction of Cactus Flower which opened last Thursday evening at MacKay Centre and continues its run this weekend. Alan Fulker is Harvey Greenfield, the dentist's obnoxious buddy. Maria Metcalfe plays Mrs. Dixon Durant and William I. Neal plays Senor Arturo. Sanchez, two of the dentist's more eccentric patients. Frank Hubbs and Carrie Middel round out the cast with several, bit parts. Linda Longwell is good as the devoted nurse who has actually fallen in love with her boss and has her character transformed in the process. Set design by William I. Neal is also good. It includes Toni's apartment, the dentist's office, a record shop and a dingy bar. The play is a bit long though, 15 different cenes in almost three l rs. Coffee at in- termission is a nice touch. Cactus Flower continues its run this weekend. Please visit the box office as soon as possible for your tickets. Andre Gagnon to perform at Blyth Hall Andre Gagnon, one of Canada's most popular, performer -composers, perforins at Memorial Hall in Blyth on Wednesday, November -24 at 8 p.m. Andrew Gagnon is a consummate artist, pianist, soloist, innovator and above all an exceptional showman performing for audiences of all ages and off all musical persuasions, classical fans and pop freaks alike, all of whom find something warm and dazzling in his music. His Blyth appearance is just one stop on a busy travel schedule that has seen him visit Venezuela, Mexico, Roumania and Greece in 1982. His last concert before he comes to Blyt1', will be his first appearance at Toronto's sparkling new Thompson Hall. Classically -trained Andre Gagnon gave his debut at Montreal's Place des Arts with a Mozart Recital in 1967. He represented Canada at the Osaka World Fair in 1970, played in Washington for Rosalyn Carter and in Ottawa for Queen Elizabeth in 1977 and for President Reagan on his visit to Ottawa in 1981. His first recordings were done abroad with the London Baroque Orchestra and the Hamburg Philharmonic. He wrote the music for Anne Ditchburn's ballet Mad Shadows which was per- formed in New York, Toronto and Montreal and wrote the scores for such movies as Phobia, directed by John Huston and Hot Touch, directed by Roger Vadim. He is one of those rare entertainers who bridges the gap between the classical and pop worlds. His 'record album Neiges sold more than 250,000 copies and his hit single WOW sold 400,000. In 1975 he played on Mount Royal in Montreal for an audience of more than 140,000. He has two CBC Superspecials to his credit and appeared on Perry Como's Christmas Special. The concert at Blyth promises to be one of the most spectacular ever seen on the Memorial Hall stage. Gagnon will be backed up by his travelling band and with special lighting and staging effect as part of the show. "I love thecloseness, the intimacy with the audience," he says of his heavy schedule of concert dates. "My first goal is to win those people over to me. Of course, they're already psychologically prepared in a sense, but I mustn't let them down. I must give them a full evening's en- tertainment and when- they go home, I want them to feel they've had their money's worth and be happy." Tickets for the concert, one of the few outside a major centre, are available at the Blyth Centre for the Arts box office Tuesdays and Wednesdays from nine to five at $10 each. Information book praised An information book com- piled by the planning and development department of Huron County was praised by one of the national com- panies that receives it. A letter from The Canada Labour Views Co. Limited was read at the Oct. 28 ses- sion of Huron County Coun- cil. The letter indicates the company uses numerous directories from various parts of the country. - "Yours is the most infor- mative and interesting of the whole lot. It makes me want to pack up and move to Huron County," company representative Mike Smith stated in the letter. The letter was addressed to Lori Vanstone, secretary for the Huron County plann- ing department. She has worked for the county for four years and has continual- ly updated the information. The book highlights such information as municipal government, education, in - Canada has a constitution__ How's yours? PaAncvaunan dustries and services. Ms. Vanstone said county schools, real estate com- panies and construction companies receive copies of the book as well as those in- terested in establishing in Huron County. Ms. Vanstone says about 150 to 180 are sent to companies in the United States and a few are sent overseas. The booklet has been in ex- istence for six to seven years. QUICK!
