The steam vessel Lurline,
purchased last week from
Walker and Sons for fishery
service on Lake Huron and
Georgian Bay by the Ontario
government, ran straight on
the hidden breakwater off
this port on Saturday about
5:35 p.m. The accident was
caused by the want of
knowledge.of the captain and
° the 'Crew. The loss of the
cruiser is a big misfortune
just now as large hauls of
fish are being made by
poachers along the Bruce
Peninsula.
Dr. Emmerson has
removed to the handsome
residence he purchased from
Mrs. Halls, opposite St.
George's Church and will
now be found there instead of
on St. David Street.
Mr. Holman ,of. Moncton,
B.C. has leased Victoria
Opera House and takes
possession today. He is said
to be a first class caterer to
opera lovers . and promises
several good shows during
the winter months..

College will be opened on.
Monday next in the' ground
floor . office of the Bank of
Commerce building. ,
The turret steamer
.Scottish Hero arrived in port
on Saturday night ' with
112,000 bushels of wheat for
the. Elevator and the
Western Canada Flour
('ompany's mill. This makes
the 14th time the Hero has
brought a cargo toGoderich
this season.

At `noontoday word was
received from Victory loan
county headquarters at
(linton that Huron County
had subscribed its quota,
$1.900.000 and the campaign
would nowbe directed to
beating .the record of the two
previous campaigns, in each
of which $2,100.000 was
raised.
Last Thursday and Friday
were rough days on Lake
Huron. a stiff southwest gale
blowing up •a heavy sea and
Friday night was one of
livelyinterest in Goderich
'harbor. About to enter the
harbor gap, the old steamer
Hibou broke her lines from
the tug Bellechasse which
had her in tow and drifted
out in the lake. Two sailors
who were on the Hibou were
later rescued by a larger tug.
The 200 acre farm of the
late J.W. Salkeld was Sold on
Thursday last to Harry
Mitchell of town for$8,500.
Owing to sugar restric-
tions, candy was out %f
bounds this Halloween and
replaced by popcorn.

With the first game just
one week away, the new
Goderich Junior "B" hockey
team is gradually rounding
into shape, says coach Ted
Williams, and the con-
struction of the new drainage
system at the local arena has
been completed.
The Port Albert airport
property, owned by Reg
McGee and Sons, has been.
leased to two clubs which
propose to open the second
sports car racing track in
Ontario.
Four test holes will be
drilled at the waterfront here
in an effort to determine
whether the Ranney system
is a practical answer to the
local water problem.
