Seniors win hard-fought 2-1 victory
BY TD
The GDCI senior Vikings won a hard-
fough 2-1 victory over the Exeter South
Huron Panthers ir. the Huron -Perth
Conference football semi-finals here
Thursday.
The victory puts the Vikings in the
Huron -Perth championship final .here •
Saturday against the Stratford Nor-
thwestern Huskies, who defeated the
Norwell Redmen 24-6 in Thursday's other
semi-final.
Andrew Telford "single-footediy" ac-
counted for the Viking scoring, kicking two
fourth quarter singles, one of 35 yards, the
other of 45 yards. Telford's punting was a
big part of the Vikings' game. His booming
punts, both with and against the wind,
gave the Vikings good field position on
several occasions.
The Viking offence was spotty, opining •
up with some big plays' but lacking the
consistency •neededto keep long drives
going: Penalties at inopportune times
stalled other Goderich drives. The rash of
penalties continued the trend of the
Vikings' first meeting with the Panthers in
last week's reglilar schedule game. Over
the two games, the Vikings had 17
penalties to the, Panthers' four.
The Vikings' defence was outstanding.
They allowed no big gainers by the Pan-
thers and ;were able to shut down the parts
of the Panthers' attack which functioned
last. week. The only Panther point .was a
third quarter 25 yard single kicked by
Christ Van Gerwen. The Panthers
managed a total of only 77 yards of-
fensively. The Viking defence got strong
efforts from Dave McDonald and Dave
Weaver at inside line backer and Greg
Lapaine and Paul Kalbfleisch played well
at the corners. Defensive tackle Ray
Vanstone and defensive halfback Chris
Pitre also had strong games.
The Viking final here Saturday will be
the second half of the double-header
championship day. The Goderich-
Stratford senior game will be preceded by
the Huron -Perth junior championship
game between Goderich and Listowel
which beings at 12:30.p.m. The senior final
will commence at approximately 2 p.ni.
The match -up. between coach Ray
Donnelly's Vikings and the Huskies should
be a good " one. In the regular season
meeting here two weeks ago between the
two teams, Goderich emerged With a slim
8-7 win. Both teams finished the season'
with identical 4-1 won -lost records, but the
Vikings were first by virtue of their victory
over the Huskies. The Huskies played
without their leading running back Dave
Gera in that game. Gera scored two touch-
downs in Northwestern's victory over
Norwell in the semi-finals.

The GDCI junior Vikings disposed of the
Clinton CHSS Redmen in convincing style
here in the Huron -Perth Conference
football semi-finals Thursday, blanking
the Redmen 24-0.
The Vikings advance to the Huron -Perth
finals here Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against
the Listowel Lords. The Lords reached the
finals by downing the Exeter SHSS Pan-
thers 22-15. The Vikings finished first in the
regular schedule with a perfect 7-0 record.
They have won the championship the past
two seasons and, with this season's record
included, have gone three years without a
loss.
The Vikings held a 9-0 lead here Thur-
sday by halftime. A first quarter touch-
down by Kevin Feagan on an eight yard
counter was converted by John Thompson.
Ftick Haas kicked two si'igles, one 39
yards, the other 42, in the second quarter.
The third quarter was scoreless, but the
Vikings broke the game open with a pair of
fourth quarter touchdowns. Feagan got his
second of the day on a two -yard pitch. John
Thompson threw to Trevor Erb for a two,
point , convert. Thompson got the final'
touchdown on a four yard blast and then
kicked the convert himself to make the
score 24-0.
The Viking defence was once again able
to shut down the Clinton defence and that
gave -the ,Gndertc1i -offence the field
.position to _put the' 'points on the
scoreboard.
The Vikings' two top running backs are
both moving in on the 1,000 yard plateau
for the season. Both Kevin Feagan (937
yards) and John Thompson (930 yards)
will have a chance to go over 1,000 yards
when the Vikes play the championship
final here Saturday.
Coaches Bill Garrow and Bruce Baker
are expecting a tough game from Listowel.
The Lords' offence centres around running
back Tom Newbigging. He has scored over
half of his team's total points this season,
so stopping him will be one of the keys to
Saturday's game.
