on the Public Utilities Comrnission
Herb Murphy
"Our water system' is
woefully inadequate, so
inadequate that it difficult
to express," says Herb
Murphy.
Murphy has served on the
Public Utilities Commission
for the past six years and is
seeking re-election this
November 8.
He says.the town's present
water system, "needs to get
caught up and at the same
time we have to plan for the
future." In planning for the
future Murphy says, "we
have to look at what the.
population will be in 15-20
years.7'
Murphy is principal at
Huron Central Secondary
School in Clinton and has a
degree in both chemistry and
administration. He feels -that
his science background helps
him understand the more
technical aspects of the
PUC.
He also feels that, "the
skills I use in one job can be
transferred and used in the
other."
If re-elected Murphy
Would like to see, "an in-
crease in the degree of un-
derstanding, mutual respect
and , co=operation between
council and the utilities."
A member of the Lions
Club,a trustee of North
Street United Church and a
member of the group
committee of the Fourth
Goderich Scout Association,
Murphy lives in town with
his wife Linda and their
three children..
Leonard
Sheardown
If re-elected for a sixth
term on the Public Utilities
Commission, Leonard.
"Ben" Sheardown, "would
like to see a little more
harmony between council
and the PUC since we have
to work closely together."
He feels that since any
deficit the PUC incurrs must
be approved by council, "it
kind of ties our hands, but as
long as we get co-operation,
there is no problem."
A life long resident of
Goderich, Sheardown was
the owner of Goderich
Frosted Foods before he
retired four years ago. He
and his wife, Georgina have
three children.
In addition to his position
as commissioner, Shear--
down
leddown serves on the Ontario
Water Resources
Association and every
summer he works as
manager of Camp
Menesetung.
Sheardown feels that the
present water system could
be updated. "It is fortunate
that we haven't had a major
fire. The past two summers
have been wet ones which
has helped, but if we had had
a major fire we would have
had problems."
He also feels that another
fault of the present system is
that, "we don't have the
proper water pressure inthe
east end of town. If a new
system was installed that
problem, would • be
alleviated."
Doug Bundy
"I am running for a
position on the Public
Utilities not because I feel
the PUC needs a wholesale
change, but perhaps it can
use some fresh ideas, and
another person with some,
technical background,"
Doug Bundy explains.
A graduate of the
University of Saskatchewan
with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Engineering,
Bundy is presently the head
of the science department at
G.D.C.I.
Prior to starting his`
teaching career, Bundy
spent five years in the
RCAF, where he reached the
'rank of Flight Lieutenant.
For the past two years he
has been chairman of the
Goderich Tourist Com-
mittee; • and has been- a
member of the committee
for three years.
Bundy, his wife, Lou and
their three children are
active iiembers of .North
Street United Church, and he
is presently Nice -chairman
of the Congregational board.
"Atthepresent tiny, there
appears to be a rift between
the PUC and town council. If
both groups are working for
the betterment of the
community, then there
should be better com-
munication between them,"
Bundy says.
He adds, "The expected
.costs of the proposed
waterworks facility requires
a lot more careful thought,
and a business -like ap-
proach. I am not convinced
this has been the case."
"The administration of our
town's hydro , and water
facilitie's must be given
careful, considered attention
so that the burden of taxes on
our taxpayers is kept to a
minimum, and that we get
full value for what we in-
vest."
Steward seeks election
to separate school board
Anne Steward is a first-
time candidate for ,the
position of trustee for the
Huron -Perth Seperate
School Board. .
She says, "I am running
for trustee because I am
interested in children, and
their education,"
Steward is . currently,
Chairman of the Stratford
Lay Deanery, a member of
the. Diocesan Advisory
Board and a member of the
CWL.
Steward says, "the main
issue facing our ,school
system will be a financial
one."
She explains, "on the one
hand, I think it is important
that we . maintain our
standards and move with the
times. On the other hand, I
feel an undue financial
Anne Steward
burden must not be placed on
our taxpayers, many of
whom are senior citizens or
unemployed. If elected, I
would work toward finding a
balance between these two
opposites."
Steward served on the St.
Peter's Advisory Board for
two years' and was Chairman
of the Board for 1980-81. She
also served as treasurer for
the' St. Mary's parent
Teacher Association for two
years.
"The children's welfare
and education should be kept
in mind during these times of
ecomonic restraint;"
Steward says.
She adds, "when there are
financial restraints,
sometimes the kids get
forgotten."
Steward, her husband
Wayne and their four
children have lived in
Goderich for the past four
years.
Escalating costs concern
separate board candidate
"The man? issue facing the
Huron -Perth Seperate
School Board in the next
three years is the escalating
cost of education," Michael
Moriarty says.
A first-time candidate for
the position of trustee for the
Huron -Perth Seperate
SchhoUBoard,_.:Mor.iarty_...ia_ _.._
the Director of Occupational
Therapy at Alexandra
Marine and General. Hospital
in Goderich. .
He feels\that, "we will
have to accept the fact that
-there are -going to be
restraints in spending. But if
we develop a co-operative
approach to problem
solving, make better uses of
resources and personel and
eliminate frills if they exist, I
see no reason why existing
programs cannot be
maintained."
A resident of Goderich
Township for the past 12
Michael Moriarty
years, Moriarty was
educated in the Catholic
school system of Ireland.
He is a member of St.
Josephs Parish in 'Clinton
and serves on its Advisory
Council. He is also a member
of St. Josephs Council of the
Knights of Columbus.
Moriarty was a member of
St. Peters Parish in
Goderich for 10 years and
served on its Advisory
Council. He served as
chairman of the St. Marys
Parent Teacher Association
and he has served on the
executive • of the Goderich
• and District Association for
—the -Mentally .Retarded.
Also in the past, he was
President of the Goderich
Minor Sport. _Association,_ a
member of the Goderich
Knights of Columbus and a
coach for minor sports.
Moriarty says he ' `fiat an
interest in maintaining and
improving the quality and
quantity of education now
available in the seperate
school system.",
If elected, Moriarty says,
"I would do my part in the
complex task of education
our children, as tomorrows
adults and leaders."
Moriarty and his wife have
three children.
Dr, Jim Peters
Dr. Jim Peters has served
on the Public Utilities
Commission for six years
and is seeking re-election for
a fourth term this November
8.
"I want to see us keep
abreast of the times as far as
securing a secure water and
electrical supply," says
Peters.
He feels that, "the town
doesn't have a secure supply
of available water, so I
would favor we get on with
the job and do it for the least
amount of money"
As well as serving as a
commissioner.,,.• Peters•_ is..,
president of District Six for
the Ontario Municipal
Electric Association and
chairman of its public
relations committee. He is a
member of the Business
Improvement Association
and the town band.
Peters is also a member of
the Rotary Club, the Legion,
K-10 and serves on the
property committee of the
North Street United Church.
Before being elected to the
PUC, Peters served on
council fortwo years.
He practises dentistry in
Goderich and lives here with
his wife, Penny and their
four children.
Peters says if a change is,
made in the present water
system, "we will be happy
that , the town can . afford it
before we go .ahead, but it is
a definite necessity."
Dr. Tom Melady
Dr. Tom Melady is a first-
time candidate for public
utilities commissioner.
A veterinarian with the
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, Melady feels that his
30 years experience of
working with the public, in
such fields as the veterinary
and the public health ser-.
vice, will be an asset if he is
elected.
Melady says he, "would
like at first, to cost stimulate
Ontario. Hydro to get into
alternate energy rather than
nuclear or fossil fuels."
He adds, "I hope to give
some municipal direction to
Ontario Hydro. in order to get
something done in regards to
alternate sources of
'energy."
Meladv feels that.
"Goderich might be able to
develop hydro power."
When discussing the
proposed water expansion
Melady says, "if they need to
update or renovate than it
should be done at the most
reasonable cost."
Prior • to becoming a
veterinarian, Melady was a
World War 11 fighter pilot, a
gold miner and a farmer.
He and his wife, Terry
have lived in Godericfh for 26
years and have seven
children.
