University will ld
'pen House this weekend
If you're looking for
something interesting to do
this coming weekend, drop
around to the University of
Waterloo campus. Waterloo
is holding its first Open
House since 1967, as part of
its 25th anniversary celebra-
tions. Open House will run
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Satur-
day.and Sunday, October 23
and 24. -
There will be a host of
things to see and do!
There will be a continuing
slide show in various parts of
the campus that will tell the
history of the University of
Waterloo. There will be
tours. '
But it will also be enough
just to wander about in .and
out of, the many buildings.
Signs, explanations and
other information will be
posted for each exhibit,
demonstration or display.
And researchers will be on
hand to explain what is hap-
pening, in the various
laboratory demonstrations.
There will be
demonstrations of all kinds
of research being done at
Waterloo including: an ap-
paratus that converts wood
into gasoline, and another
that converts sawdust into
protein, • for animal feed.
There will be displays of
research aimed at improv-
ing solar heating
technology; and research in-
to solar cells, that generate
electricity from sunlight.
There will also be
demonstrations of research
into a variety of pollution
problems. .
You'll see how testing is
done on' an improved type of
artificial hip joint, and on a
new design of gymnasium
mats ... testing that involves
the use of a 'special, highly
sophisticated crash dummy
so-the'research can measure:
• what the impacts would be
on a live human. There will
-be research on_ the develop-
ment of better anchors for
offshore drilling rigs, and
research to improve naviga-
tion in the high Arctic, so we
can get at oil and gas sup-
plies there.
You will be able to take
part m a number of ac-
tivities.
For example, you will be
able to wat exchanges in
your heartt aike; • and ,.blood
pressui e'when you exercise.
You Will be 'able, to 'check
your athletic skills ,,: such as
your golf swing. You will be
able ' to look through' a
telescope, play chess with a
computer, do a multilingual
crossword puzzle (for a
prize), paint a picture using
a computer, or take part in
an on-going public opinion
poll.
There will be allkinds of
demonstrations into how
computers are used :.. to
solve serious problems with,
and to play games with.
There • will .. be special
displays in •the various
museums on the campus, in-
cluding the , optometry
museum in the optometry
building, the biology and
earth' sciences museum in
the biology building, pioneer
Mennonite handicrafts in the
Brubacher farm house, and
the games museum, in Mat-
thews hall -. as well as in the
art gallery in the modern
languages building. There
will be a special "tower of
Babel” sculpture in the
" modern languages building,
done especially for the occa-
sion.
T fere will be a display of
actual models of designs
originally done by Leonardo
da Vinci, on loan from IBM;
this will be located in the
Canadian Industrial Innova-
tion Centre -Waterloo, at the
corner of Phillip and Colum-
bia Sts., just off campus.
You can watch a high-
pressure jet of water cut
through plastic; see glass
blowers and fiber spinners at
work. You can watch a com-
puter being used to create
crossword puzzles that ac-
tually get used, eventually,
in crossword puzzle books.
You can see a new type of
pavement reinforcement be-
ing tested ... and on and on.
There will be a number of
special book displays, and a
display of ancient musical
instruments.
You can spend all day on
campus — both days, in fact
— and still not see it all.
And if you get hungry,
there will be places to eat or
to stop for a coffee in. These
will include a "Continental
Cafe" in the modern
languages building, featur-
ing French food, and a Cafe
Italiano at St. Jerome's Col-
lege, featuring .Italian food.
There will be a special
gourmet luncheon on Satur-
day and a special pancake
breakfast, Sunday morning.
The University expects up
to 50,000 people to visit the
campus during the two-day
Open House .., it should be
quite an event! Watch for a
blimp, flying over the cam-
pus to mark the spot, both
days.
Keep your child from
choking on Hallowe'en
Hallowe'en brings ghosts,
goblins and, sometimes, real
danger. The Ontario Lung
Association warns about one
danger for children—the risk
of choking on holiday treats
such as candy corn, hard
candy and peanuts.
At Hallowe'en, children go
door-to-door "begging".
Parents should insist
youngsters bring the goodies
home for inspection. For the
youngest—two, three or even
four yearsold-some of the
candy can be divided or
mashed before eating.,
The chewing , and
swallowing muscles of young
children may not be suf-
ficiently developed to cope
with certain treats. Choking
can result. Hallowe'en
goodies also may "go down
the wrong way," and lodge
in the lung instead of the
stomach. This is called
aspiration. A "foreign ob-
ject" of any kind in the lung
can cause life-long pro-
blems. At times, surgery for,
removal is required.
The best warning is: Be
sure children' are old enough
to. chew and swallow
correctly before trusting
them with small, hard bits of
food. Parents ,should always
be on guard against "small
objects" getting into the
hands of children. Par-
ticularly those young enough
to want to put everything
into their mouths. 0
