Senior Vikings win important game 8-7
BY TD
fhe GDCI senior Vikings won what could
turn out to be the battle for first place in
the Huron -Perth Conference football
league here Thursday, defeating the Strat-
ford NOrthWestern Huskies;8-7.
The victory gives the Vikings a share of
first place with three wins in four games,
the same record as the Huskies. Each
team has one game remaining in the
regular schedule. The Vikings finish their
schedule with a game in Exeter Thursday
against their arch -rivals, the South Huron
Panthers who are currently in second
place with a 2-2 won -lost record. A win
would give the Vikings first' place
regardless, of the outcome of Nor-
thwestern's game with their cross-town
rivals, Stratford Central who are also 2-2.
•The Vikings were full -value for their win
here Thursday. Their offence moved the
• ball with a good deal of success but some
penalties in key situations kept them from
scoring more points.
The first .half was scoreless but Jeff
Feagan put the Vikings on the board with a
four-yard.touchdown run on a sweep in the
third quarter. Joe Melady kicked the con-
vert to give the Vikes a 7-0 lead going into
the fourth quarter.
The flualties tied it up on. a converted
touchdown by Shane Antaga on a 62 -yard
pass and run play from Ken ,Whetman.
The margin of victory for the Vikings
came on a single resulting from a wide 25 -
yard field goal attempt by Joe Melady
mid -way through the final quarter.
Jeff Feagan was a real workhorse for
the Vikings, carrying the ball 40 times for
a total of 219 yards. He got some fine block-
ing by Greg Marahall.' Dave McDonald and
Ed Craig. Andrew Telford's punting was
also an important factor in the Vikings vic-
tory.
The Viking defence turned in a strong ef-
fort too, being beaten badly only on the one
touchdown play by the Huskies.
The one obvious weakness was punt
return coverage'. The Huskies had several
long returns. Coach Ray Donnelly feels the .
Vikes must improve this aspect of their
game before another meeting with the
Huskies. .
Right now, however, the Vikings are
concentrating on. Thursday's match -up
with, coach Ron Bogart's Panthers.
Although a win would guarantee first place
for the Vikings, a loss to the Panthers
could see the Vikes finish fourth.

goal lead, assisted by Andrew Telford a ti
Mark Crawford. This was short-lived ki,lk
however as Oakridge finally got on the

Goderich's coming from Del Bedard,
assisted by Dave Gallow. •
