Jean was a key speaker at the conference and her message was one of hope, trust and gratitude to all Care Givers; because without their help in the management of pain, she would not have been able to do the things that she has done over the past three years and to speak at the conference that day. She has recently written a book, 'FOE- All FbrAll That Has Been: A Time To Live And A Time To Die'. Some of the books and tapes from the speakers' workshops were purchased for the Goderich hospital's nursing library and are available for Shared Ser- vices. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross spoke on 'Children Facing Death'. The famous Swiss psychiatrist is doing most of her work in the United States. Her concerns lie deep within the family structure and the fabric of,society. She said that people with a ter- minal illness are blessed because they have time to prepare to die - to get their house in order, to have a friend or family to talk to them; and there are support services such as Palliative Care. But she is concerned about those who have no sup- port service. "In the United States one million children run away from home each year and ten thousand of them . are murdered: The third cause of death of our beautiful children between the ages of 6-16 years of age is suicide." She receives 5,000 letters each year from, desperate /N 38 HAMILTON ST. D-.. CLIPPING AND GROOMING 524-7181 1IN STOCK AT ALL TIMES r ; BUDGIES, CANARIES, TROPICAL FISH, ALL PET SUPPLIES. DEARBORN STEEL PRODUCTS INC, reference parents who do not know where to get help. She said that 95 percent of these suicides can be prevented, and the answer lies in parents giving unconditional love to their children. Too often love is bought. It is given and withheld depen- ding on the child's behaviour., While limits are set and certain behaviour is not condoned, the child must know that he is loved no mat- ter what. Her advice to all mothers was from the moment that the child is born until he is one year ord to physically touch and hold that child, especially during that first , year of life. The human be- ing is made up of four quadrants: physical, spiritual, emotional and- in- tellectual. The physical touch is so important to the development of the other quadrants. Similarly, when a person is in physical pain, he will not hear a prayer or a coun- sel. He needs to be kept pain- free and conscious in order tb have his other needs met - spiritual, emotional, etc. She 'said that love is a physical maturity - that touches, holds, and hugs. In the United States six billion dollars is spent on lotions to get rid of wrinkles. She would like to take that money and set up a program to bring toddlers of working mothers into nursing homes to teach children whatlove is all about. If we would give our elderly Tulconditional love, with physical touching, they would not have to flee into senility. Her work with terminally ill children has taught her many things. Under the spiritual quadrant, dying children intuitively know the probability of the time of death and they express this though symbolic languages (drawings, etc.) She said that people can- not help the dying to com- plete unfinished business if they have a pocket full of un- finished business themselves; that people who are tuned in to the spiritual quadrant will neither fear life or death; that working with the dying and Their families is not depressing. 11 is only depressing if we can't let go. She stressed the im- portance of listening to your patients. Marks 80th birthday Harold Larder celebrated his 80th birthday on October 10 with an open house from 2 to 4 p.rn.
