Hydraulic arm assists
with maintenance
work on farth drains
By
Rhea Hamilton
An hydraulic arm is the
latest in farm equipment for
maintenance work on drains.
Unique to Canada the arm is
being demonstrated to
municipal councils and
farmers through the co-•
operation of the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation
Authoirty and the Upper
Thames Implementation
committee.
The arm was on a working
demonstration in Hullett
Township Monday and
Tuesday, cleaning out a
drain. Attached to a 125 hp.
tractor the arm would reach
down into the ditch and the
narrow rectangular bucket
scoops out the sludge and
Supplies. Paula Vanderburg
raised the most money for
the girls and Steven Stothers
raised the most for the boys.
Door prizes were won • by
Judy Kerr and Marlene
McDonald. Holly Park was
the youngest participant
while Ann Feagan was the
oldest rider.
Harry Brindley Auctions
held another successful sale
on Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Waller
and Amanda of Belleville
visited on the weekend with
her parents, Lloyd and Doris
Hodges. On Sunday they all
epjoyed Thanksgiving with
the other Hodges family
members at the home of
Dennis and Val Vanderburg
at the Nile.
Company on Monday with
Bill and Marie Park and
family were Mr. and Mrs.
Steve Park and Holly, Mr.
and Mrs. Mike Bendig and
Joel and Vicki Park, all of
Goderich, Jirn Fowlie • of
Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Park and Tim Hodges of
Dungannon.
Congratulations to A.J.
and Cora Sherwood who
celebrated their 37th wed-
ding anniversary on Mon-
day, October 11. Also to Gord
and Cindy West and Steve
and Debbie Waller who
share the same date.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stirl-
ing, Darlene and Harold 'of
Thamesville visited on the
weekend with her mother,
Elsie Irvin.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Shetler
have returned from a visit
with their daughter and hus-
band, Major and Mrs. Maher
at Camp Petawawa.
deposits it on the bank above
the open drain.
Alec Scott, Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation
Authority, said the idea and
the equipment came from
Holland. In that country,
which is criss-crossed with
innumerable dikes and
drains, the land along the
banks is grassed and kept
clear of debris. Farmers
there do a routine Inain-
tenance check yearly on the
drains. The arm keeps the
work relatively easy.
The arm which is leased
from a Dutch firm, by the
Thames • committee could
make major. municipal dram
eleanouts a thing of the past
if implemented and used on a
yearly basis.
