Unique apple head dells
to be sold at country fair
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Just like human faces,
each face on an apple head
doll is uniquely individual.
"No two look the same,"
says Willa Bogie of Saltford
who has been making apple
head dolls for a little less
than a year now. She plans to
have about 50 of these dolls
for sale at the Christmas
Country Fair October 20 and
23.
Willa learned to make the
dolls after reading a book on
the subject which she picked
up on a trip to Toronto. She
bought the book after ad-
miring the dolls she had seen
on display in stores there.
Her first few attempts were
given away as Christmas
gifts last year. Since then,
Willa says she has become
better at making the dolls
with practice.
Apple head doll making is
not an expenisve hobby. The
only materials needed are
apples (the Delicious kind
work the best), some scraps
of material for clothing,
lemon juice, salt, apple
keeper and silica gel. Willa
uses straight pins for eyes
and sometimes a bit of paint
for the cheeks. Her husband_
Barry makes the little
wooden rocking chairs which
accompany some of the
dells., Other accessories
include tiny brooms,
newspapers, knitting needles
and yarn.
Even though there isnot
much expense involved,
apple head doll making is a
time-consuming hobby and
Willa finds she has to be
organized to fit it into her
already busy schedule as a
hair dresser and mother of

four. However, she says
since she enjoys the craft, it
is worth taking the time to
do.
Willa actually enjoys a
whole range of crafts. She
has taken several craft
courses and, can do ceramics
and silk flower , arranging.
She also taught herself to do
macrame from a book. She
enjoys going to craft shows
just to pick up ideas for
crafts she might like to try.
However, she never thought
she would end up in a craft
show herself.
"I'm still wondering how I
got talked into the whole
thing," she says a bit ner-
vously inanticipation of the
upcoming country fait.
The Method
Willa says the method for
making apple head dolls
sounds complicated but is
really very easy:
Start with a peeled apple.
Carve out a face with a knife.
While doing this, keep dip-
ping the"apple in lemon juice
to keep it ., from turning
brown. Sprinkle with salt
and hollow out the core. Put
apple keeper (a yellow
powder which can be bought
in local stores) inside where
the core used to be to keep
the apple from spoiling,
Next, put the apple in an
oven on low heat for about
one hour so it will partially
dry. Hang it up for a week
until it gets quite pliable.
Then pinch it with your
fingers every clay for about
five days to make the cheeks
and chin.
Take the apple keeper out
and put the apple in silica gel This wrinkled little man is just one of many apple head

Evelyn giving up fair
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Mrs. Wilmer (Evelyn) Hardy, the
driving force behind Colborne Township's
popular Christmas Country Fair for the
past 17 years, is calling this year's fair her
last.
Next year's fair will be organized and
run by the Bluewater Chapter, Order of the
Eastern Star bodge.
Mrs. Hardy and a committee of five
other women -Phyllis Allin, Ila Bean,
Adelaide I agan, Grace Easom and the
late Annie Lamb -started the fair in'1965 at
Carlow Hall with about 12 exhibitors, in-
cluding themselves. Since that time, the
fair has grown hi leaps and bounds.
Several years ago it was moved to Saltford
Valley Hall to accommodate the swelling
cro_wd,S.
This year, several thousand people are
expected to visitthe fair during its two-day-
...
fun Octobet M'aridli. There Will be about
60 craft- exhibitors..aleng With. !Mr people
selling produce and a -bout -25 people selling
homemade baking.'
For the last 10 years, Mrs. Hardy has
had the committee of Blanche Kerr, Tryn
De Groot; Iia nun-, Dorothy 'fisher,
Evelyn .Allin. and Edna Moore_ helping her.
For the last 16 years, Bernice Fisher has
convened the baking section (if the fair.
This section has been known to take in as
much as $1600 over the two days.
While Mrs., Hardy is extremely modest
and quick to name all the people who have
helped her over the years -including the
Ministry of Tourism which mailed- 2200
brochures 'advertising the fair free of
charge the first year --it is clear that she
took the lead right from the start and has
oecn the main organizer ever since. She
has done the majority of the advertising
and publicity work fQr the fair. Andshe
has always searched out new' talent to
feature each year. In fact, as soon as one
fair ended, she would begin otganizing the
following year's.
"It's been a lot of work and respon-
sibility but I've received a lot of enjoyment
and satisfaction front 'it," she says. "I
knew i had to give it up some time and I
often wonder how I've gotten along as well
as I have over the years."
This last statement refers to the fact that
Mrs. Hardy is somewhat handicapped by
the brace on her leg and crutches she must
use since contracting polio in 1954.
Organizing the fair has been good therapy
for that handicap because it keeps her
.
Now that she is giving up the respon-
sibilitie,s. of the --fair, Mrs; ..Hardy.says_she
..
would like to do more travelling. She will
-also .--have--more---time-to-spend- •-on- -her
weaving hobby. She is a member of the
Huron Tract Spinners and Weavers Guild
and'alsn teaches weaving to beginners.
She has promised the Eastern Star that
She wilThel'p them •with the organization of
• the Christmas Country Fair for their first
few years at the helm. And the fair's
successful structure will remain the same-
-only 25 cents admission at the door and a
small fee for exhibitors, with Colborne and
Goderich exhibitors getting space
preference.:
So, a tip of the hat to a modest Mrs,
Hardy for keeping a good thing going all
these years. Let's hope the fair will do
equally as well under the auspices of the
Eastern Star.
