Check system
Has your manure . system
had a check-up lately?
Some manure storages are
located in areas that aren't
handy to check every day.
Often farmers find that,
because of heavy rains or
leaking water bowls, their
manure storage fills up
faster- than they expected.
Some systems involve fre-
quent pumping, which may
be started up automatically.
If a pipe breaks or a joint
comes apart, it's not always
spotted right away. Most of
the problems that come up •
give some warning. That's
why, by following a regular
inspection routine, a lot of
these problems can be avoid-
ed.
Make sure the storage is
sound, not deteriorating to
the point of failure. Check
out all the plumbing to see If
cracks are showing up in
plastic, or if steel pipes are
corroding. Make sure all
safety devices, such as
covers, are in place.
