The 300 fans that watched the final game
at the Goderich Industrial Fastball Cham-
pionship on Saturday night were treated to
one of the most exciting and entertaining
contests in recent years as the youthful
Canada Company came from behind to
score a dramatic 4 to 3 win over a very
talented and gutsy Bedford Motel team. •
Canada Company opened, the scoring in
the first inning as Brian Shewfelt reached
first on an error. A neat sacrifice bunt by
Mike Donnelly was followed by another
clutch hit by Glen Tigert and Shewfelt was
home with the first run of the game one
out later. Mark Frayne singled to put two
Canada Company runners on base. Dean
Doherty greeted Bedford starter John
Crawford with another -single -but -a -strong
throw by center fielder Gary Peters
caught Tigert at the 'plate and ended
Canada Company's first threat.
In the bottom of the first, it was Bed-
. ford's turn to show their power. Lead-off
man Gary Peters started the parade with a
crisp single to center. The usually precise
Dean Doherty then walked Terry Austin
and Glen Falkiner to load the bases for the
always dangerous Bill Black.,"Mr.
Reliable" came through with a hardsingle
up the middle that scored Peters but.
another great throw, this time by Mark
Frayne, cut Terry Austin down at the
plate. The fine throw took on greater
significance as Del Mitchelmore hit the
gap in right center for a triple that cleared
the bases and gave Bedford a 3 to 1 lead.
Mitchelmore's RBI, however, was the
' last one of the season for the .Bedford Hotel.
as Dean Doherty settled down and Canada
Company began their comeback quickly.
In the second, Mike Frayne received a
rare walk and Steve Arbour followed him
• with a hit. A sacrifice by .Bill Tigert put
both men into scoring position and Brian
Shewfelt delivered the big hit to • tie the
score at three runs each. Rob Plunkett
replaced John Crawford and got out of the
inning without further damage.
The game which had started out with so
much hitting now settled into a contest
between two of the league's excellent
young pitchers: Dean Doherty only allow-
ed isolated singles in the fifth and sixth in-
nings. In the sixth, however, the single by
. Del Mitchelmore followed a' walk to Glen
. Falkiner and Bedford suddenly had the go-
ahead runs at secondand third. With
defeat just a single mistake away, Doherty
got one Bedford batter to pop out and
another to ground out to end the only
threat Bedford 'could manage after. their
first inning explosion.
In the sixth, Plunkett had also overcome
the challenge of men on second and third
but in the seventh his and his team's
"luck" ran out. Mike Donnelly started
panada Company's final inning of the
season with a single.
To improve the situation, CC coach Jack
Evans replaced Donnelly. with speedster
Tom O'Brien. One out later, Rob
McDonald's single moved O'Brien one
base closer to home. A good -play by Bed-
ford shortstop Dana Doherty removed
O'Brien from the basepaths but an infield
single by brother Dean, loaded them. up.
Bedford however, only needed one out to
end the inning. Two pitches later; Bedford
only needed one strike to get out of the inn-
ing as Plunkett zoomed two pitches past
hitter Mike Frayne. The third pitch to
Frayne, however, dipped by catcher Brian
Sowerby's glove and Rob McDonald, who
had flown home from Sudbury to play, flew
home in a different sense to score the go -

ahead run for Canada Company. Dean
Doherty needed only four pitches to
dispose of the final three Bedford hitters in
the bottom of the seventh and Canada
Company was the champion. of the 1982
Goderich Industrial Fastball League.
Congratulations to both teams on a great
show. It is hard to believe that these two
exciting teams finished in eighth and ninth'
place in 1981. A great game to finish the
year and an ironic twist to the. final out of
the 1982 season. In the ,last pitcher -hitter
confrontation\of the season, Dean Doherty
faced Dana Doherty. Dean won this time
but look out next year!

The Vikings allowed Stratford only two
first downs in the entire game and never
allowed the Rams to advance beyond mid-
field. The strong defensive . play of the
Vikings consistently gave themexcellent
field position and the offence was quick to
capitalize on their opportunities.
Tailback John Thompson scored four
touchdowns and ran for a total of 221 yards
to pace the Viking attack. Thompson's
touchdowns came on runs of two, three, 53
and 61 yards.
Kevin Feagan had two other Goderich
touchdowns and rushed for 139 yards.
Feagan ran 17 yards on a blast play in the
second quarter for one of his majors and
rambled 44 yards on a sweep in the final
quarter for the other.
Other Viking touchdowns were scored by
Shawn Rahbek on a 58 yard gallop in the
third quarter and Tevor Erb on a nine yard
run in the fourth quarter.
John Thompson kicked one convert and
was on the receiving end of a two-point
'conversion toss by quarterback Steve
Bugler. Grant Garrow also caught a two-
point convert pass from Bugler. The other
Vikings point came on a single on a 65 yard
kick-off by Jeff LeBeau.
The Viking offensive line, composed of
Dave Almasi, Matt . Buchanan, Pete
Willems, Ken Huff, Rick Haas, Darryl
Black and Scott Stokes, totally dominated
Stratford. Steve Bugler, in his first start at
quarterback, played a fine game.
Darren Connelly intercepted two passes,
returning them for 13 and 24 yards and
Doug Lounsbury intercepted anther
errant Stratford pass. The Viking defence
also blocked a third down Stratford punt.
Yesterday (Tuesday), the Vikings
played here against Listowel. Thursday,
coaches Bruce Baker and Bill Garrow take
the Vikings to Clinton to do battle with the
Central Huron Redmen.
