The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-09-29, Page 27New church for
A new church, known as
the Church of Our Shepherd
King, has been formed in the
Clinton-Goderich area under
the direction of the Reverend
W.A. Ludwig.
Official worship services
are presently being held in
the Holmesville Public
School gym at 10 a.m. and
6.30 p.m. each Sunday.
Pastor Ludwig says the
decision to form another
"church" in the body of
Christ was based out of
reverence for Scripture that
calls us always to be
prepared to make a
"defence" to anyone who
calls us to account for the
hope that is in us. (I Peter
3:15).
"We have come to see that
all reasonable and lawful
efforts to resolve serious
differences and diffieulties
with fellow members of the
Christian Reformed Church
have proven to be un-
productive," Reverend
Ludwig said. "Since much of
the unresolved difference in
spiritual direction has to do
with such weighty matters
as the preaching of the Word
and the Christ invested
authority of the local con-
sistory, we felt bound by the
spirit to turn away and form,
by God's grace, another
church that will stand firm in
ed
what we recognize to be the
most Biblical tradition of the
Protestant faith: the
Reformed Calvinistic-
Kuyperian tradition."
"We recognize the
strength of that tradition to
lie in its simple but profound
claim that Christ is truly
confessed only when He is
confessed as both Saviour
from sin and Lord of our
life," Reverend Ludwig said.
"Delivered from the debt of
sin and the slavery of our
disobedience by the death
and resurrection of our
Saviour, we are saved •to
serve Christ un-
compromisingly in all areas
of life until every knee shall
bow and every tongue
confess that He is Lord r'Phil.
2:9-18).
"We believe that our
responsibility in' education,
farming, business, politics
can be determined and
exercised obediently only in
so far as that sense of
responsibility is informed
and redirected by Scripture
that we confess is able to
equip man for all manner of
service," he said. "Thus we
do not believe that Christian
perspective and practice is a
matter of personal choice or
preference, but is very much
a matter of reasonable
service."
Education WI theme
The September meeting of
Goderich Women's Institute
was held in the MacKay
Centre with a fair at-
tendance and three guests.
Roll call was, "How we
have improved our
education since leaving
school." The answers
revealed that many op-
portunities are available to
all ages.
Minutes of the
August --meeting were given
by secretary -treasurer E.
Sitter, including the cash
income.
Flower convener Emma
Anderson reported on the
sick and sent flowers to Mrs.
J.H. Johnstone in the
hospital: Mrs. G: Morely
thanked those who
remembered her 50th
wedding anniversary.
In new business, Mrs.
Taylor displayed a'
beautifully designed history
book by Lorne Hyde.
A donation was made to
the Livery Theatre project
and also to the pre-school
nursery at Vanastra.
An invitation was received
from Wingham W.I. to 'at-
tend their 80th anniversary
meeting October 1. It was
decided to send four
members from Goderich.
The theme for the meeting
was Education and Cultural
Activities. Mrs. C. Taylor
gave a paper with in-
formation that prompted -the -
decision to give prizes to
Grade 8s at Robertson and
St. Marys Schools thanks to
the generosity of the late
Gavin Green.
The president gave a
recitation on Special
Education.
Several classical guitar
selections were played by
Lisa Steckle, a very
promising young artist.
The guest speaker was
Mrs. Clayton Edward who
gave a detailed report qn the
restoration of the Livery,

Does the Gospel give us
the formula for a peaceful
world? Listen to these words
of Jesus: "Love your
enemies; 'Do good to those
who hate you. Bless those
who curse you; Pray for
those who treat you badly.
To the man who slaps you on
one cheek, Present the other
cheek too. To the one who
takes your cloak from you,
Do not refuse your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks
you, And do not ask for your
property back from the man
who robs you." (Luke 6: 27-

Our first reaction to these
words is to say: "Lord, are
you serious? How could
anyone get by living that.

MINIE3TI,W Rte STUDY
the experience of mankind
when we hate our enemies,
seek revenge, and im-
mediately rise up in anger
and 'come out fighting' when
our precious rights are
violated? It is a sad history
of wars, oppression, never -
forgotten feuds, fear and
unrest, injustice.
No need to look beyond our
own lives to see how true this
is. Let one person dare to
slight another and, far too
often, we see anger, resent-
ment, and a determination to
'get evep'. Yet, how much
more peace would we ex-
perience in our families and
communities if we heeded
these powerful but disturb-
ing words of Jesus and were
ready to forgive injuries
done us! Someone criticizes
our actions. The Christ -like
response should be to give
the other person credit for
having good -will, for honest-
ly believing that what he
says is justified. But so often
our reaction is one of anger,
of emphatic denial, and we
completely miss any oppor-
tunity of profitting by what
my be the truth about
ourselves and a valid
criticism.
Can the Gospel formula br-
ing peach among nations?
Jesus says: "do not ask for
your property back from the
man who robs you." Britain
did not treat the Falkland
Island situation this way.
But the memory of the Hitler
era was too fresh to play the
risky game of appeasement:
Hitler's armies occupied the
Rhineland; then he demand-
ed and got the Sudetenland,
took over Austria and
demanded Danzig before the
Allies said "no".
Would it work in our own
day 40 years later? Suppose
that Nato pulled its troops
and weapons out of the coun-
tries bordering on Russia?
Suppose the United States
4, scrapped its atomic
weapons? b there anyone
who seriously believes that
the Communists would not
take advantage of this? On
the other hand, prolonged
arms races have resulted in
wars, sooner or later, We
have never tried the way of
those who curse us, love
those who hate us, consider
the loss of possessions of less
importance than living in
peace, we will be laying the
foundation for peace in the
world.
Jesus so how can we know if
it would work?
What conclusions can we
draw? Are those who pro-
mote unilateral disarma-
ment prophets or fools? No
one can, be sure.?But we can
be sure that the peace we so
earnestly seek and pray for
must begin in the heart of
each person in his daily life.
When we are willing to bless
Jesus suffered unjustly,
and was willing to give up all
His possessions, - even His
life. He calls us to do the
same: to `die' to our own
self-interest so that we may
rise with Him to the newness
of life. When enough of us
make this our daily life, then
we will begin to understand
how Jesus' `peace -formula'
can be applied to the whole
world.
