proper parenting in a
chapter entitled 'How to be a
Stupid Parent'. His thoughts
'are worthy of reflection. He
writes as follows, in pointed
form:
"1. Only chasten the
children when you lose your
temper. Let them get away
with anything until you're
fed up, then in a spirit of
hostility and anger let 'em
have it. Blow your top,
holler, get wild, clobber
them, really raise the dust,
make a brawl out of it. The
kids will get a . bang out of
you.
2. Don't make yourself ap-
proachable so that you listen
to them and reason things
out with them. If you get too
chummy with them, they'll
want to talk things over with
you. And who's got time to
waste with kids? You've got
more important things to do.
3. If they've done wrong
never- let them forget it.
Keep rubbing it in. (A father
was telling me, in front of his
son, about a trouble the boy
got into five years previous-
ly, when he was 13. The boy
was shamed and disgusted.
When the father went to
answer the phone, the- son
said to me, "He makes me
sick.'! I felt like saying, "Me,
too!") The kids will loathe
you for it.
4. Give the child all the
spending money he wants,
r•
GOIXRICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1962—PAGE 3A
and don't make him earn it.
Money in large quantities is
an acceptable substitute for
love. After awhile they'll
want your money and they
couldn't care less about you.
It's something like starving
them on cream puffs.
5. Compare your child with
someone else to make him
smarten up. Use that
beautiful expression, "Why
can't you be like Johnny?"
He'll despise you and'Johnny
both.
6. Let mother and father
disagree on rules for
children. Children will then
learn to play off one parent
against the other.
7. Never let the kids think
for 'themselves. They
haven't the equipment (the
reason may be in their
heredity or environment).
Make all decisions for them.
They'll never be able to han-
dle life.

Couple mark anniversary
On August 23, 1932, George, --

Street United Church, Wat-
ford, Ontario by the
Reverend E. A. Hart.
They now have a family of
seven children; 21 grand-
children and five great-
grandchildren.

members of their family,
also the matron of honor,
Mrs. Margaret Lucas, sister
of the bride, sat down to a
roast -beef dinner.. The head
table was centered by floral
arrangements given by the
family and neighbors.
In the evening a reception
was held. at Saltford Valley
Hall, attended by relatives
and friends.
Many cards and gifts were
received, also con-
gratulatory messages came
from federal and provincial
members of parliament.

If they turn out well, it.,
won't be your fault. It'll be a
