Goderich residents will
have an opportunity to view
one of the U.S. Coast Guard's
-new class of icebreaking
harbor tugs when the
Biscayne Bay makes its
second trip to Goderich this
Friday. Scheduled to arrive.
at 10 a.m., the Biscayne Bay
will be participating in the
505 Sailing Regatta planned
for the weekend.
The cutter's primary task
is the opening and• main-
taining
aimtaining of the ice -bound
shipping lanes in the Great
Lakes: 'Because of the need
for larger and stronger
icebreakers, the Biscayne
Bay was designed. with many— •
new
any-
new innovations aimed at
increasing the icebreaking
capabilities.
This vessel has greater
horsepower, • higher
displacement and a wider
beam than the older 110's.
One of the most useful
systems that the ship has is,a
"hull • air lubrication
. system." This will assist the
cutter in extracting itself
from the ice and at low
speeds will improve its
icebreaking capabilities.
With the new innovations
built into this vessel it will be
.better equipped for the tasks
involved in search and.
rescue than its 110 coun-
terpart. Due to its greater
speed' it will be able to reach
the search, areas sooner and
-the higher freeboard will
afford greater protection for
the men onboard.
Town and. area . residents
are invited to tour the vessel'
while it is docked in
Goderich.
