The Goderich Township Community Centre was filled with well wishers of every age, who know, love and respect two of the area's lifelong residents and longest married couple. For Les and Edna it was an evening to enjoy their favorite activity, visiting, and Les claimed that be kissed at least 500 women. It was the flower in his lapel that made him so attractive to the females, he quipped. The'60, years of marriage appear to have helped keep the Jervis's healthy and happy and Les has promised HURON -PERTH • CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD STUDENT REGISTRATION Kindergarten -Grade 8 Parents of Catholic school age children who are new to the area May register their children at on* of the following schools on or before 7th Sep- - tember. 19112- U. Les likes to tease and sass, Edna quietly listens on, smiling at all of her husband's jokes and tales that he says are not suitable for print. There are few marital problems for this couple. They have no regrets and both agreed that if they had the opportunity to tum back the clock, they would marry still each other and do it all again. "The first five years are the hardest," Les recalled. --Your wife will be saying, 'Who's that girl you're looking at.' " More seriously he ex- plained, "After a few years, you find that you can't get along without each other. If only these divorced ones waited a bit." rate Jervis' 60th Anniversary Memory time Thursday night was a time to remember old friends and days gone by and even though. the anniversary party lasted until midnight, Les said there still wasn't enough time to visit with everyone. Les was still talking about the old days when the News - Record visited the Jervis home on Monday - but he censored most of the good stories about his time with the Huron Middlesex militia reserve. He did tell about his days as a mailman during the 1930s when he "made enough money to keep the wolves from the door." In spring and fall the mail was delivered with horse and buggy, la winter the cutter was used and in summer the old car was geared into action. It took a few beatings and dents, but the children learned to drive. • The Jervis family farmed in Goderich Township and son Ivan recalled, "Mother used to mow the hay, milk the cows and hit the at- tacking rooster with her wet The rooster, Mary, added, used to get dunked' in a barrel of whey to cool his temper, but the lesson Was, only remembered a few days until he was back into action again. Love of animals. Les and Edna Jervis have a special love for animals and for the last 25 years they have shared that love .with thousands of other people at their bird and animal san- ctuary, just outside of Hohnesville. It was on a trip to Europe that Les saw such a sane- tuary and decided to come hoine and build one of his own. The sanctuary is a "mousetrap': according to Ivan, bringing people in so Les can spend the day Edna looked after the sanctuary guest book for years, while Les has tended to the sheep, deer, geese, hens, llama, pheasants, peacocks, highland cattle, and the sanctuary's main attraction - Sam the yak. There's a young fellow who helps out with the care and feeding of the animals now, • but Les still makes a daily visit to the pond to check on the wildlife; and visiting people. The Jervis's also have many friends and a large family to visit with. Son Ivan and his wife Flo travel in Canada and the United States, but make their home base° in Perth. Daughter Mary and her husband Allan Parks live just down the road and son Walter and wife Doreen are in Clinton. As Well there are eight gran- dchildren, eight great grandchildren, "and prospects for more," Les noted. ,Special evening Many relatives and friends from all parts of the province were on hand to help Les and Edna Jervis celebrate their diamond wedding an- niversary last Thursday night. • The party is still the talk of the Holmesville conununity, particularly the 'whole beef and pig meal that was barbecued over hot grills since early morning, and the desserts that were made by the family. Elmer Trick was there to play some oldthne piano music at supper and Star Trex finished the evening off with dancing music. 1 A new minister and his family have taken up residence in Auburn recently.
