Harvesting scenes along the highways and byways re, mind us that sumer days are numbered and that we will soon be into the fall routine. Huron County Historical Society members will be receiving their newsletters soon, giving information about the two general meetings coming up. It is hhe word along they o their will fiends s so they will not miss The in- teresting program being planned. Those who went on the bus tour to Owen Sound in June reported a most enjoyable day, with beautiful spring scenery along the way. These tours are indeed popular and it is hoped that the Society will be able to come up with one to a new area year. y ear. The volunteer workers at the Archives had a busy time cataloguing and placing two, large donations of Huron County material from Mr. Phelps of the University of Western Ontario Library system, as well as n]any from private -,,,individuals. The efforts of MissBelle Campbell of Seaforth are ap- preciated. The fruits of her years of historical work will go where they will be most useful. All these items are a great boon to researchers, many coming personally and many others writing for . in- formation about their ancestors. Due to the emigration of individuals, as well as whole families, to Michigan, Ohio and other parts of the United States and to the Canadian West in the latter part of the last cen- tury;- there has been, an -in-- -.- creasing number o'f requests from far-off areas. Replies are sent to all, with as much information as can be found. Homage is paid to all those who have served this Historical Society so faithfully since its inception in 1964 and who have passed on to their rewards, the last being Mrs. Tait (Jean) Clark of Colborne Township. Until her illness, she labored over the years building up the col- lection -of-histor y -at the Ar- chives when it was situated in a room at the museum. A great debt_of gratitudefis iFt ed to her and hercolreagues,• It is said. that a country that forgets its past, has' no future. Many are working to preserve the past for future generations. 'It is hoped that each and every one will, do his or her part. Desert Song opens Desert Song, the hit musical from the, Shaw Festival, will open the winter theatre series at Blyth Centre for the Arts Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24. The pocket version of the famous 1920s musical by Sig- mund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II tells the story of The Red Shadow, a dashing, masked hero, a l iu& uCan 'Robin hood who disrupts French colonial military operations. Beth Anne Cole, who stole hearts at Blyth last year with her one -woman show, plays the daughter of a French Colonel who loses her heart to the mysterious Red Shadow. Also among the cast is Alicia Jeffrey who Stratford, has starred at S Theatre London and Huron Country Playhouse. She . plays the dancing girl who seeks revenge for her rejec- tion by the captain of the out- Post - The productions, full of memorable music and bright costumes, won raves of even normally hard -to please, Toronto Star critic Mallet. allet. who called it "sheer enchantment". With a cast of eight and 4 two musicians, Desert Song is one of the largest touring productions to visit smaller centres in the province. 'It features 26 songs including Blue Heaven and The Riff Thi 'rn ighi nas v Broadway musical. of 1926 has been scaled down to fit smaller stages by Christopher Newton, artistic director of the Niagara -on= the -Lake theatre. Individual tickets are now on sale at the bok office for the Sunday matinee perfor- mance at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10.
